It appears there will be a St. Patrick’s Day parade in Charlottetown this Sunday after all.

The parade is not officially associated with the Benevolent Irish Society (BIS), but will see a number of individuals that still want to march show their support for Ireland.

Gene Dowling, organizer of the cancelled parade, said individuals are planning to meet at the Murphy Centre on Richmond Street at 2 p.m.

“We want as many as possible, we are going to walk the streets and show our support for Ireland and everything that’s perfect about it,” Dowling said in an email to the Guardian.

Dowling noted that people don’t have to be Irish to take part in the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

The BIS has hosted the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in Charlottetown for more than 35 years.

However, it was announced earlier this week the executive committee made the decision to call off this year’s parade.

BIS president George O’Connor had said the group planned to review the parade for this year but never got around to it.

He said the review will be done before next year’s parade to make the event bigger and better.

Other St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are set to go forward as planned, with Irish-themed pubs — the Olde Dublin Pub and the Old Triangle — planning a full day of entertainment Sunday.

Other bars will be open earlier Sunday, with entertainment all day, special foods and, of course, green beer.

Piet Hein, the BIS is an excellent organization that holds many events throughout the year, and are highly experienced at planning and executing numerous events both weekly and yearly. That they cannot organize a yearly parade that celebrates everything Irish, especially since this parade has already been planned and held every year for decades, doesn't make sense. Please, try to grow up from your ignorant personal comments, and actually discuss the subject.

Shame on the critics, -- when is the last time you spend hours and hours volunteering for anything-----. George O Connor is giving his time, - he is there at every Friday event during the summer, making sure here is a lunch for the people and some one to take tickets at the door, --- all so the club can thrive and Irish traditions be kept alive. I can`t believe people like Cathy Doyle, - where do you come off ------

intobed,- for your information, and as I understand it - The Benevolent Irish Society it private volunteer club, ----and as such does not OWE the community a parade, - that they have done so for many years is to their credit, ---- putting on a parade takes volunteer time and some money, - maybe the Society did not have the man power or the money, --- so to the critics, --- go and give your time and money and you can have your parade. Give before you take ----- and think before you critize----

Alfredd, the BIS is indeed a volunteer organization, and an excellent one. There is wonderful entertainment at the BIS hall pretty well every weekend. They also assist with many charities, and give unselfishly of their time. St. Pat's day is the premier event of the year, and the parade is a big part of it. The parade is not a new event , and is not that different from year to year. "... not got around to it" just doesn't sound right for such a good organization.

"The BIS has hosted the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in Charlottetown for more than 35 years." Must be a typo. Perhaps 135 years is correct? I participated in the parade in 1966 and 1967 and it was sponsored by the BIS then.

"BIS president George O’Connor had said the group planned to review the parade for this year but never got around to it." What? The single biggest worldwide celebration of all things Irish, and the PEI Benevolent Irish Society cancels the St. Pat's Day parade because they never got around to it? Something here doesn't make any sense.

INTOBED, The BIS is run by volunteers and is a not for profit organization. It is a lot of work to host a parade plus organizing the afternoon's entertainment at the BIS building. I am sure you don't give any of your time to volunteer with them, but that sure does not stop a troll such as yourself from posting comments just to cause as much hurt to people as you can. Why don't you volunteer with the BIS (if they will have you) and maybe help plan next year's parade. I know it will cut into you internet trolling activities, but instead of complaining why not get out of your pajamas and try to help by volunteering. But somehow I think you are more of the complaining type then helping kind. You are a real class act.
