Prince Edward Island drivers will be paying a bit more to fill up their vehicles but heating a home will cost less once the latest price adjustments from the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission are implemented.

The Guardian has learned gas prices will increase by one cent per litre at midnight.

However, diesel prices will fall by 2.7 cents per litre.

Home heating oil will take the largest drop, falling 3.2 cents per litre.

The commission will make the new prices official after midnight, once the new prices are in effect.

Pump prices for regular gas will now range from 128.3 to 129.4.

Gasbuddy.com, a website that tracks gas prices across North America, says the average pump price in Canada is 129.8 cents per litre and rising.

To all those folks advocating cutting back on gas usage to lessen demand and therefore forcing the price of gas downward...unfortunately it doesn't work that way. If consumers use less fuel, the oil companies will increase the price of gas on the remaining stock to try and recover the lost profit due to decreased volume. The USA is a good example. The USA population has decreased their consumption of gas by using hybrids, public transportation, car pooling, work from home, etc. In order for oil companies to recover the lost profit from decreased volume they cut production and increase prices on their remaining stock. One of the big reasons that oil products are cheaper in the States is because of volume( i.e. a lot more gas is consumed there as the population is 10 times greater than Canada}.

So what's it going to take to wake you sheeple up, huh? How long are we going to put up with these tyrannical provincial and federal governments? The genie is out of the bottle now. Government knows it can do whatever it wants and the people will just accept it willingly. We are all living in indebted servitude to a tyrannical oligarchy. The gov knows that increasing the stress levels on its people will eventually lead to those same people rebelling. So why is it happening and why now, at this particular point in time? EVERYONE IS CURRENTLY IN SHOCK. That's right, as a province and a country we are in shock, so whatever is going to happen, it's going to happen soon, before the shock wears off and people wake up. The world has changed drastically from when I was a child. They are letting us stay reasonably comfortable considering how bad things really are. Government is not telling us what we need to know, and that is the TRUTH about EVERYTHING. We are smart enough to understand and deal with the circumstances. Government thinks that its people are stupid, but what I disagree.

What do you suggest? If you are going to call others "sheeple" then I assume you are leading by example? So what is it you are doing besides writing comments on the Guardian comments page?

So the next increase April 1st, with the addition of 8 cents for HST will mean Islanders will probably be paying somewhere between $1.37 and $1.40 a litre. Good luck tourism, with gas prices nearing $1.40. Think your groceries are expensive now, wait until HST kicks in and truckers have to pay more to deliver. Islanders already pay among the highest if not the highest personal income tax in Canada and as someone on a fixed income living here it is getting beyond my means to afford even some of the basic necessities.

It's always amazing to me we find out on the 1st and the 15th of each month about what the regulatory commision is going to do,,, but,,, the oil company seems to always know before us, because if there is an decrease coming they always manage to come and fill up your tank beforehand!!! and as for the gas prices,,, well like I keep saying the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer and the middleman gets to carry both!!!

WAIT UNITL APRIL 1ST !!! GAS WILL BE UP 8 or 9 Cents, Electricity will be up 20%, Food will go up because the higer cost of gas and so will every other goods and services. Business will NOT give the consumer a break, and I don't know where the goverment ever thought they would. Poverty will grow and jobs will be lost due to it. PEI has a "soft" economy, a fragile ecnonomy, and taking more from the consumer will mean less for business. This is not the way to encourage growth. Actually, due to our fragile economy, any change will reverberate negatively throughout. I work for a living, a middle class worker with a family who will really feel the pinch. I feel sorry for those who aren't as fortunate. And that is what is wrong with government.......no heart, no democracy, just take, take and take. Complete disregard of the impact on the less fortunate or the people in general, and more for themselves. I wouldn't want to be a Liberal right now, I would probably tell you where to go.

Speaking as a BC consumer living with HST, will be so glad when we return to former PST on April 1.The electorate here voted to overturn the government's implementation of HST after it was imposed on us. You, too, have a Liberal gov't and in two months we hope to be rid of ours with all the greed , corruption and lack of ethics they brought to government. Prepare for the reality of the extra costs you will now pay. Shameful!

I like your idea Donald, but gas will only continue to rise in the coming years. We may see small decreases of a couple cents from time to time but people in Britain have been paying more than $2 a litre for over ten years now. The truth is Gas is not an unlimited resource and we've had it too good, for too long. Reality is finally setting in now, and it will only get worse in the future. I wouldn't be surprised if it's $1.60 a litre at some point in the next year or two. People will be forced to live closer to where they work, carpool, or take their bicycle, it's as simple as that.

    - March 14, 2013 at 22:21:07

Makes sense. the other Maritime province just went down but they don't have the HST coming in the end of the month which means more taxes on gas for the boys. Furnace oil is dropping because the winter is finished and the taxes are not as high on furnace oil. Wes said in the paper yesterday that gas would be going up.

      HST is already there
      - March 16, 2013 at 11:08:25

HST is already in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. It is a good thing in the long run. PST is very expensive and HST although has some bad, will in the end be good for everyone.

Funny how that happens when it's warming up and people tend to drive more and heat their house less.

Yes, it's called ECONOMICS 101. The law of supply and demand. Demand for item A (fuel oil) goes down, supply goes up, cost goes down. Demand for item B (gasoline) goes up. supply goes down, cost goes up. Go get an education. Next!

Of course furnace oil is going down now. Freezing cold weather is over and people won't be buying as much. Would be nice to get a decrease in price in winter but that's not ever going to happen. Of course we can count on gas going up because with spring coming, people will be doing more driving, maybe taking more road trips.

    Temporary Bump?
    - March 14, 2013 at 17:57:29

Is this a temporary bump so they can pretend we are not getting screwed at the end of the month and the HST kicks the price up by 8 cents? Is this a way to make the price increase 7 cents so it doesn't look as bad because we are absorbing the cost earlier on? Or is there a real reason price of gas is going up when price of oil is stable?

A whole penny? Just wait until the beginning of next month. The HST alone will increase the price like we have never seen before. Thanks a bunch to all the greedy groups that lobbied for the HST, and endorsed it when it was announced.

On another note, I find it funny when people scramble and make a special trip to the gas station to fill up when the price of gas goes up 1c a litre... Think about it. If you have a 50 litre tank, you are saving 50 cents. If you're driving 5 or ten minutes to get to the gas station you're likely burning $1 - $3 getting there. Use your heads people
