Alberton-Roseville MLA Pat Murphy is in Peterborough, Ont. today representing P.E.I. at Wednesday's Stompin' Tom Connors memorial.

Canadian music icon Charles Thomas (Stompin' Tom) Connors died Wednesday, March 6 at the age of 77 in Halton Hills, a region of greater Toronto.

A private memorial was held Tuesday but Connors himself was deeply involved in planning Wednesday's public event, personal friend Brian Edwards told The Canadian Press.

Connors was raised by foster parents in Skinners Pond P.E.I. That community is in District 27, Tignish-Palmer Road represented by PC MLA Hal Perry, who didn't get the call.

Muprhy said he was asked by executive council to represent P.E.I. and Premier Robert Ghiz at the memorial.

"I have always been a fan," said Murphy during a phone interview prior to boarding a plane Tuesday. "I think all Islanders are fans of Stompin' Tom."

Murphy said he has not been asked to speak at the memorial as a representative of the province where Conners spent his youth.

"It's a great honour to be going up," said Murphy.

I think you may be mistaken SAP. I recall it as him feeling hurt by it. And voicing it. And personally a man who would stay backstage and meet fans for a few hours after his performance when he needed to be in NB for the next nights show tells me he probably wouldn't argue about money for a chance to sing at the Bridge opening. He stayed after his show at the Jubilee and signed autographs and posed for pictures with his fans. He couldn't have been nicer or more down to Earth. He was all about CANADA ,and the Confederation Bridge opening would have been a big thing to him.

RIP Tom. A great entertainer. Mule Skinner Blues performed by Tom was my personal favorite. He killed it at the Jubilee Theatre in Summerside. On the for shame side, wasn't he dissed from performing at the opening of the Confederation Bridge? Who was behind that? That seemed a bad decision to me.

To be accurate, I think he was offered a place, but he turned it down because it didn't pay enough. I may stand corrected on that, but i am pretty sure that's how it happened.

To be honest..Tom offered to play but was turned down because he didn't fit the image they wanted to portray

POI, if indeed that is the case, then it does seem like a poor decision.

Had a call regarding Tom's service and where it can be accessed. Contacted TV Cogeco in Ont., got a reply. "The service will be on Rogers and Eastlink cable channels throughout the east coast as well as on CPAC. There will be a livestream at www.tvcogeco.com/peterborough". Some of you may already know this but thought I should pass it on for those who don't know.

Wish I could be at that service. I'll certainly be there in spirit. Tom is one of my heroes.

It is really too bad P,E.I, did not do more to promote Stompin Tom when he was alive, like play his songs on the radio, etc.

Your going up and not speaking? Who is paying for this? Hear you are taking in a game while up there. Enjoy
