The penny may be going out of circulation but there will be a few more pennies circulating in Prince Edward Island customer’s pockets once the new gas prices go into effect tomorrow.

Effective 12:01 a.m. Friday, March 1 gas prices will drop by one cent per litre, The Guardian has learned.

That will push the price at the pumps down to 127.3 to 128.3 cents per litre.

Diesel prices will drop by 2.5 cents per litre.

Furnace and stove oil prices will decrease by 1.5 cents per litre.

The Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission, which regulates gas prices in Prince Edward Island, will make the new prices official Friday morning.

Gasbuddy.com, a website that tracks gas prices in Canada, said the average price at the pumps in Canada is 130.0 cents per litre and holding steady.

    Passing Political Gas
    - March 1, 2013 at 11:46:06

By my obsessive calculations, Islanders that use the new Plan B highway twice a day for every day of the year and get an average of 30 miles to the gallon (12.76 km/L) will save as much as $3.95 a year on fuel costs. But, only at the current rate, and if the road is used everyday, twice a day. Hold those savings against the 30 million dollars (or much more) tax payer will shell out for the actual pavement companies and what we're left with is pretty much . . . well, less than nothing. If we're into passing political gas about a penny, I just thought you might be interested in my 2 cents worth.

Let's see, then the amount of time an Islander will save will be approximately the same amount of time it takes to squeeze out $3.95 worth of gas? Each year? And this only costs thirty millon dollars? Clearly, this is a great example of why our MLA's deserve a raise!

why don't you get rid of the "penny" value in gas and make it $1.25 straight across the board. lower the prices of gas and you will sell more. it's not nice to be greedy, money isn't everything. since we got rid of the penny why do you get rid of the nickles and dimes too, round things to the nearest quarter. but every two cents extra you get from rounding up.... should have an affect on fuel prices and could be dropped more. it's more often that prices will be rounded up then down.

So, the price per barrel of crude oil goes up $15 in two months, and the price of gas goes up 8 cents. Then the price per barrel goes down $6, and the price of gas goes down a penny? And I thought my math was bad forty years ago.

Whoo.Hooo...A whole damn cent.....DAMN it all...Who is going to save much tomorrow(Friday) on a fill-up??...Savings won't even get you a coffee at Timmy's....Let alone save you anything across the board....I'd really like to get rid of our regulators....But...who would they replace them with??....more Liberals...under a different named process....Just as bad....

They should be ashamed of themselves. Oil is $92 a barrel a short while back it was $92 per barrel and we were paying $1.15 per litre. Legalized stealing.
