Several months of investigation into inter-provincial drug trafficking has led to the arrest of six people and large seizures of illegal drugs in both PEI and NB, says a press release today.

"The combined efforts of the Charlottetown Police Services street crime and major crime units, the Criminal Intelligence Service of PEI (CISPEI), and  RCMP from both PEI and Moncton’s street crime units and serious and organized crime units have dealt a substantial blow to organized drug trafficking between QC, NB and PEI," said the release.

“Police believe the arrests will have a substantial impact on the street level drug trade in PEI.," said  Charlottetown Police Services Chief Paul Smith. "This was a sophisticated network that used bar codes, labels and readers for their drug inventory, management and distribution. Drugs would be transported from the Montreal area, to Moncton where they would be distributed for delivery to dealers on PEI for sale.”

“The results here are an excellent example of working together as law enforcement agencies to reduce crime,” says Supt. Marlene Snowman, officer in charge of Codiac Regional RCMP. “Criminals know no borders or jurisdictions which is why law enforcement agencies work closely together to ensure those who would cause harm in our communities are stopped.”

A total of 54 pounds (24.5 kilograms) of marihuana and a quantity of prescription pills were seized as a result of what was called Project RADIN. Arrested were two men from PEI aged, 31 and 33 years old, two men from Quebec and a male and female from New Brunswick. All face charges of possession for the purposes of trafficking and will appear in court to answer to these charges over the next couple of months.

"Charlottetown Police Services are committed to reducing illegal drug activity in our Community and the criminal activity that is associated to it," says the press release.

More information will be released as details of the investigation unfold.

MR. Anti-Pothead, because you knew people in teens who smoked pot, and are now losers. "heavy drug users living in poverty, ruined their lives" you are we all are destined for the same path? ever stop to think it was the person, not the herb? i am a very successful adult male, and quite frankly i likely make more money than you do, live a full life with no drug addictions, and can honestly say i have never once even tried a drug. i smoke marijuana every day. so tell me how it ruins lives?? do some research, youre a joke.

While I'm not for the legalization of marijuana, I can understand how some people use it for pain etc.... I know smokers (both casual, and heavy), and from what I see, it basically numbs your mind, and makes everything "alright" for a short period of time. It removes all pain (weather emotional or physical).... and I'm sorry to say, but this is not normal.... people should learn to face their pains (both emotional and physical) instead of doping themselves up and pretending everything is alright. One of the big problems with legalizing it (that I see), is the fact that once removed from the "black market" side of things, just think about how much harder it will be to track down other illegal substances.... there is A LOT of weed that moves through the system, and its all the same gangs/people moving the weed, and the pills, the harder drugs, the guns.... through the same web of distribution. Once you removed marijuana.... it removes an entire tracking method. Now from a business cash/flow perspective.... If i was a drug dealer, and all of a sudden; I cant make money off off weed..... GUESS WHAT!!! I just upped my order for pills because I need the money to increase the cash-flow I just lost. Anyway; theres tonnes to be said from both sides, but just thought I'd throw a few comments in that had not yet been said.

There is a LOT of ignorance and lack of knowledge on here about legalization of marijuana. Get your facts straight before you jump into an argument you know nothing about, because those of us who ARE educated will school you. The war on drugs isn't working, legalization and regulation will benefit the economy, as well as our health and our children. It'll also help to eliminate organized crime and find the real bad guys out there. It's all the misinformation and ignorance about this topic that makes me angry. Go open a book, search on the web, or watch a documentary. Go learn something before you open your mouth next time, folks.

Legalize it, tax it, use the profits to fight the real problems. Anit-Pothead - Do you think your friends would be in the same situation if they were not subjected to the same people when buying their pot? In MY opinion the main reason pot is a gateway drug is because of who you meet when buying it. Beer isn't a gateway drug, when was the last time someone at the beer store tried to sell you cocaine?

The problem with legalizing pot is the people who want it legalized are users of pot who tend to glorify it as a wonder drug when really all they want is to smoke it and get high. Be honest about your intentions and stop shouting down people who oppose you, everyone doesn't have to agree with you. The arrests indicated in the story were about organized crime which probably involved guns and gangs, it's not so much about the drug as the activity of those involved. Cigarettes are legal but still smuggled by organized crime, the gangs who smuggle are opportunistic people who want money they don't care if it's guns, weed or even people all they want is money.

I've seen firsthand how out of control drugs are getting on PEI. I'm so glad as a province we are finally starting to tackle the prescription pill problem. It's not about marijuana, it's about heroin, cocaine, prescription pills, thefts, burglaries, crime. The RCMP, CISPEI and Charlottetown Police did great work and should be commended! But there is a lot more work to be done, please let average citizens know how we can help!

    Legalize it...
    - February 23, 2013 at 07:50:31

Legalize marijuana and rather than spending multi millions in police work we can tax it..., marijuana is not the problem. Opiates is the issue of addiction. You know the one the doctor's prescribe. The ones the police officer at the City high school was finding in so many of our youth. Legalize marijuana like booze.

These potheads on here, trying to rationalize the use of Marijuana, are pathetic drug addicts & law breakers, not in control fo their mental faculties. I had a close friendships with relatives of mine while growing up in the city. They started using marijuana in their mid-teens. I did not. Our paths branched off, the friendships subsided. Today they're heavy drug users living in poverty. Marijuana destroyed their lives. Wouldn't it be interesting to see some of the faces and lives of the people on here defending the use of marijuana?! Legalizing marijuana will weave its way into the fabric of the lives of many, and leave them broken and pathetic, like TAX PAYER, GARY and PROGREEN.

How would it make a difference in your life if they legalized it? I don't think it would make ANY difference. The same people would still buy it. Just like alcohol it is legalized but it still effects people. And you say you would like to see the faces and the lives of people on here defending marajuana .Your probably thinking that all they are all pot heads. Well I for one do not smoke it and do not like it but I am all for it because if they did legalize it, it would not make a difference in my life, if anything it would make it better. Why do you think it is legalized in to states?

so your basing everything you think abut this on one case of a friend or relative or whatever you said, is that not a stereotype? i know a lot of people that have ruined their lives with alcohol but i don't know anyone who has ruined their life with smoking weed as the only bad decision alone, sounds kinda crazy to me and i know more then only one person that smokes

The thing about this is in the heading they used the ORGANIZED DRUG RING TITLE ! to make it look like they are doing something with there budget for ORGANIZED CRIME FUNDS from 2012 so that they can get more money for 2013 its all about the money : ) Something to think about !

You almost got it right. What you should have said if government would take the tools out of the criminals hands by legalizing these drugs the kids would be safer and the police would not have to waste resources on these busts.

I TOTALLY AGREE with country boy!! Get the hard drugs off the street!! Weed is NOT the problem. It;s the prescription pills that are causing so much crime and killing the kids!!! I'm afraid to see what PEI will be like in another 2 years, and not because of pot smokers! Has Anyone ever watched intervention or any documentaries on pot use? Not usually. ,,, It's so easy for the kids to get pills and so many are addicted. People don't usually fight to get in the addiction center, OD or go to prison because they smoked to much pot.!! Thanks for doing what you do guys, and It's good to see that some prescription pills were seized but this bust was obviously focused on the pot. Would REALLY LOVE to see the drug rate go down with the hard drugs.

If the government would legalize it then they could make money by taxation, plus they would not have to pay to put marijuana users in jail. It would be a WIN WIN situation, don't you think? So government must have a better reason for keeping it illegal. Perhaps they are the ones supplying it to the gangs. It would make more sense if they are already the ones profiting from it or the ones making the profits are controlling the politicians to keep it illegal. If it was legal it would take the black market profits out of the equation thus keeping the real criminals away. There should be a referendum, BUT AS WE KNOW, government stopped listening to regular people a long time ago.

Just legalize it, this fight is never going to end until we win. That's 54lbs of something that should never have been taken. Puff on cigarettes all day because the government makes bank but cannabis and you're thrown in jail. What a corrupt system.

You want to impress us then get the hard drugs off the street. 54 lbs of weed is not a major drug bust. There is more than that amount grown in our local fields. Now don't get me wrong, I don't support drug use of any kind. Just saying the hard stuff is causing all the other associated problems like break ins and thefts.

more and more young man and woment heavily take drug around Charlottetown. They are idlers who rent rooms paid by Social Service Dept. Some were just released from Jails because of criminal and taxpayers pay their rent and allow them to take drug and continue doing illigal activities. They enjoy being lazy and never want to work to make money for living and totally rely on the social benifits during summer time even a lot of job opportunities. The reflect me why our taxpayers can endure our money transfering to their pockets and in turn they do harm to our society. For example, three days ago, the young girls living in my apt are forced to take to hospitals because they took drugs night time and hit walls and yelled with so terrible seizures that other tenants felt so scared and complained about it. Yes, To remove weeds, we need to find out where the root is . I hope the goverment strenghten control of drug abuser and put a felony for drug trafficking. Also, I spoke to Social service officer, applicants who want money for their rent should be reviewed for their criminal history record. To some degree, support their illigal activities when authorize their applicant because they help them to do wrong using taxpayers' money.
