Several months of investigation into inter-provincial drug trafficking has led to the arrest of six people and large seizures of illegal drugs in both PEI and NB, says a press release today.
"The combined efforts of the Charlottetown Police Services street crime and major crime units, the Criminal Intelligence Service of PEI (CISPEI), and RCMP from both PEI and Moncton’s street crime units and serious and organized crime units have dealt a substantial blow to organized drug trafficking between QC, NB and PEI," said the release.
“Police believe the arrests will have a substantial impact on the street level drug trade in PEI.," said Charlottetown Police Services Chief Paul Smith. "This was a sophisticated network that used bar codes, labels and readers for their drug inventory, management and distribution. Drugs would be transported from the Montreal area, to Moncton where they would be distributed for delivery to dealers on PEI for sale.”
“The results here are an excellent example of working together as law enforcement agencies to reduce crime,” says Supt. Marlene Snowman, officer in charge of Codiac Regional RCMP. “Criminals know no borders or jurisdictions which is why law enforcement agencies work closely together to ensure those who would cause harm in our communities are stopped.”
A total of 54 pounds (24.5 kilograms) of marihuana and a quantity of prescription pills were seized as a result of what was called Project RADIN. Arrested were two men from PEI aged, 31 and 33 years old, two men from Quebec and a male and female from New Brunswick. All face charges of possession for the purposes of trafficking and will appear in court to answer to these charges over the next couple of months.
