Sleigh rides, skiing and swimming will be three of the more popular activities when Islander Day hits on Monday.
Brookvale Winter Activity Park is expecting a large crowd, offering Islanders two-for-one deals on lift tickets and rentals from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Islanders may purchase one ticket for the trails or lifts and receive another one of equal or lesser value free. The special also includes ski or snowboard rentals.
“If everything goes well, the weather holds and conditions are good we’ll be very, very busy,’’ said Shane Arbing, manager of provincial parks. “(Islander Day) is quickly becoming a big day for us. There are certain days throughout the year we do very, very well and we had a tremendous start to the year for the first couple of weeks.’’
That doesn’t mean Brookvale hasn’t had its issues. They’ve had to make snow on more than one occasion.
“It’s been kind of a wacky winter, between being tremendously cold to rain so we’ve had our struggles for the last couple of weeks.’’
For the folks down east, Souris has a free day of music, sleigh rides and awards presentations on Islander Day at the Eastern Kings Sportsplex from noon to 3 p.m.
Lt.-Gov. Frank Lewis will present the Queen’s Jubilee medals at 1:30 p.m. to Mayor David MacDonald, Couns. Joanne Dunphy and Thelma MacDonald and local citizens Eugene MacAulay and Frank Blackett.
A family skate begins at noon with music by Sharon Winters, Christa Young, Dylan Ferguson, Peggy Clinton and Johnny Ross in the Acorn Room.
Horse and sleigh rides will be available throughout the day.
The Charlottetown area has a bevy of family-fun activities going on all weekend with its inaugural Winterfun Weekend. Details are available on the city’s website.
Cornwall has outdoor fun for all from noon to 3 p.m. at the Terry Fox Sports Complex. There’s also zumba at 12:30 p.m. at the Cornwall Civic Centre. There is a $4 drop-in fee.
In Summerside, people can take part in relay races, noodles, team races and treasure hunts at Credit Union Swimplex from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Slide swims go from 1-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.
Sleigh rides are also being offered in Argyle Shore and Winsloe. Potts Sleigh Rides are located at 459 Bonshaw Road in Argyle Shore (675-2107) while Terpstra Family Sleigh Rides can be located at 992 Rustico Road in Winslow (626-3705).
