Party takes double-headed approach with Myers as party leader, Hal Perry as Opposition leader

Newly elected interim PC Leader Steven Myers says the party needs to stop focusing on the mistakes of the past and begin working toward uniting and building for the next election.

Myers was elected interim leader by the Progressive Conservative executive and the five Tory MLAs on Thursday evening in a closed-door meeting in Charlottetown.

He was vying for the position with fellow MLA Hal Perry, who was named Opposition leader Wednesday, and former PC candidate Linda Clements.

Myers told reporters he is happy he was chosen as interim leader and will begin working right away on bridging the deep divisions that have plagued the party for months.

“Starting tomorrow morning we need to start rebuilding the party from the ground up and I look forward to doing it,” Myers said.

“We need to start repairing any divides or bad feelings that are out there in the party. We need to start pulling it together and we need to go out to the grassroots to do it.”

As interim leader, Myers now has the top job in the PC party and will be responsible for the membership, rules, policy and preparing the party for the next provincial election.

But he will not have the top job in the legislature.

Just one day ago, Hal Perry put his name forward during a caucus meeting to take over as Opposition leader after Crane announced Tuesday she was quitting this position. She announced in December she would resign as leader of the party.

Myers also put his name forward for the post of leader of the Opposition, and a vote was held.

Sources have told The Guardian Perry had the support of Crane and Souris-Elmira MLA Colin LaVie for this vote, thus a majority. Opposition leader is chosen by consensus of the Opposition caucus.

Perry now is the leader of the Opposition.

But many within the party and the public are confused by this new situation. Traditionally the same person has held both the position of party leader and Opposition leader, unless the party leader was unelected – an Opposition leader must be an elected MLA.

This may be the first time in P.E.I. history in which the party leader and the Opposition leader are two separate people within the same caucus.

Myers has previously said he believes one person should hold the two roles.

On Thursday he confirmed his feelings on this remain the same.

“I’m not going to change my mind on it, but at this point it’s not within my control.”

In the meantime, Myers says he will make the best of it.

“It happened. It’s behind us, so we need to start moving on,” Myers said.

“Tomorrow’s a new day, we need to move forward as a party, we need to move forward as a caucus, we need to move forward as an Island.”

The meeting Thursday was a difficult one for media to pin down. Party president Blake Doyle changed the time once and the location three times – the last change just over a half-hour before the meeting began.

The meeting itself was closed to media and the public, but The Guardian was told members of the executive asked Perry to sign a letter saying he would not run for the permanent leadership if chosen interim leader. He refused.

Myers reiterated Thursday he will not run in the leadership convention.

In the end, the 15 members present cast their ballots – 12 for Myers, three for Perry and zero for Clements. With this result, it is suspected Perry received votes from Crane, LaVie and himself.

Perry could not be reached for comment before deadline Thursday, as he was attending a meeting in Alberton.

While I'd never vote for the extremely corrupt Liberal party and it's pathetic, so called leader, I had faint hope that the "new" Tories might be above the corruption and hiding their past involvement in PNP and other corruption at all costs. Their voting for a leader who looks like a Farside cartoon character wearing his much smaller brother's clothes certainly doesn't help instill confidence. Looks like it's time to vote NDP!

you are ABSOLUTELY right "FOLLOWER" We need to know any potential leader's stance on the PNP. As much as many of the party elite would like this matter to evaporate, it simply won't. It may make no difference to the staunch party members, who think presenting a united front is priority one in order to defeat the Liberals, but it is actually the PNP issue that will unite many of the ELECTORATE behind the PC party in ousting the Liberals... YOU SAID IT! - get it right and do it early. There are many who are waiting to support this party but will never do so if they smell any hint of cover-up of back room control.

Mr Myers, your first priority must be" TELL US YOUR VIEW ON THE PNP ISSUE" THIS WILL MAKE OR BREAK YOU. I AM CONFUSED OVER WHY TWO PEOPLE ARE IN THIS PSOITION WHEN IN THE PAST OLIVE CRANE DID IT ALL, MAKES MORE SENSE, AS WELL HOW DOES ANYONE JUSTIFY PAYING TWO POSITIONS THIS KIND OF SALARIES FOR WHAT THEY INTEND ON DOING. gET IT RIGHT BOYS AND IMMEDIATELY, THE MORE CONFUSION MAKES rOBERT AND HIS GANG LOOK GOOD.

Myers your mind has already been changedon the leadership issue. If you felt so strongly about it you should have stood down thursday after losing the support of caucas the day before.I support Mr. Perry as opposition leader and wish him and caucas well in there efforts to clean up a mess. It appears from press reports that you are the puppet of the backroom boys who are spending far too much time trying to hide something. Could it be PNP??

Red and blue are just illusions on PEI. There is a group grabbing everything they can and working together to cover it up. And there is us, the other 95% of the population. That is all there is to it. Especially with Steve Myers stepping up as formal bad ole back room boy representative. Blasting ino the past likea meteor. Hard to beleive the PCs let this all slide into backwardness so severely. The Ghiz corruption was too appealing. BTW is Ghiz ever coming back from his vacation????

Hurry up PCs. Get a permanent leader without the usual baggage that these two have. This party is going to self implode! Even though I've mostly voted PC and occasionally liberal (what was I thinking?), I'm strongly considering parking my vote with Greens or NDP by default.

The new Party President and his cohorts Murphy and Lea have done more to divide the Party then anyone on record. If this new group think they have a chance at electoral success they are out of their minds..If their back handed and sleazey approach to solidifying the Party is any example of how they will govern...no thanks!! The Party will not win an election in the next two decades. They have charted a course to the abyss where the federal Liberal now live. Time for the new political parties interested in governing to step up to the plate. Both the Liberals and Conservatives have lost their way.

Problem with the PC and Liberal parties is that there is an excessive amount of testosterone clouding their judgement; and we all know that translates into power struggles which inevitably results in poor decision-making. Case in point. NDP all the way; bring on the election!

I've never seen PEI in such a Sad State Financially or Politically. What is more depressing it just seems to detereoriate more each day while Islanders stand back and watch. Islanders' Comments on Websites will DO Absolutely Nothing to bring about change, diminish our Debt, provide jobs or meals for many Islanders who are presently in dire straits. But it's nice our Politicians can SMILE.

This is so confusing. I was thinking of going conservative but this is such a mixup, no chance of that ever happening.. Have one person do both jobs, leader of this, leader of that, still too confusing and you won't be able to rebuild the party by doing this mess. Backroom boys should all be thrown out of there and start over new!

    - January 31, 2013 at 22:39:15

Its a shame that Myers is the leader. I once had a run in with Myers at my place of employment. I talked to him about being in the pc party (which i explained i supported) and then tried to help him find what he was looking for. After a couple minutes of trying to help Mr.Myers i had to call another store (competition) and see if they had the product he was looking for and got them to hold the product for him since they had it in stock. I didnt even get a thank you from him, instead i got a " i guess it was a waste of time coming here" and left. I vowed right then and there i would never vote for him. And now that he is leading a party i guess that means ill not be voting for the party in which i supported in the past.

The PC's are a mess without Crane!! She had ALL Islanders concerns at heart and done a wonderful job trying to fight for the right things....he own parties backroom boys had too much to hide and kept stabbing her in the back until she resigned and now they have nothing!!! Who would want to vote for a party that only caters to the backroom boys the same way the Ghiz government does??? The PC's are no better in that regard. NDP is the only way to vote in the next election...they are the only logical choice to get PEI politics back on track. Crane tried her best.....but too many backstabbers making the decisions to gain any ground!
