Surprised PC members learn Opposition leader's position already decided as party meets today to elect new interim leader

Newly minted Opposition leader Hal Perry says he expects to stay on as leader of the Opposition regardless of who is chosen as interim PC party leader Thursday.

Members of the Progressive Conservative executive and the five Tory MLAs will decide in a vote Thursday who will become interim leader of the PC party.

Perry and fellow MLA Steven Myers as well as former PC candidate Linda Clements are all vying for interim leadership, which is the party's top job.

But in an unexpected development Wednesday, Perry was also named the new Opposition leader.

Perry now says even if he is not chosen as interim party leader, he ‘absolutely’ expects to stay on Opposition leader.

“Traditionally they (interim leader and Opposition leader) have both been the same person, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t be two people. It’s not something that’s unprecedented,” he said in an interview Wednesday.

“It might be a good thing. One doesn’t know until they actually try it. There’s two different perspectives coming and two different positions. Either way it’s a win-win.”

Wednesday marked the day Olive Crane officially resigned as leader of the PC party, which she announced in early December.

She caused controversy within the party when she indicated at that time she intended to remain as Opposition leader even after her resignation as party leader. But on Tuesday, Crane announced she was tired of constant backstabbing from the party’s backroom and that she was no longer interested in any leadership role within the party.

Then on Wednesday morning, during the weekly caucus meeting, Perry put his name forward to replace Crane as Opposition leader.

He would not give details about how his colleagues reacted to this, citing caucus confidentiality. He would only say he was chosen by a majority of his colleagues after a show-of-hands vote.

But with the election of interim party leader scheduled for just one day later, many have been left wondering why there was such urgency to name a new Opposition leader so quickly.

“It was decided that we would select an Opposition leader today, that we would have a vote on it, because we didn’t want to have any down time in between,” Perry explained Wednesday.

“It was decided that we would select an Opposition leader today, that we would have a vote on it, because we didn’t want to have any down time in between,” - Hal Perry, Tignish-Palmer Road MLA

“This is a position that represents all Islanders, not just our party, and we have an obligation to represent all Islanders and we don’t want to leave that vacant.”

But many in the party believe this move was one to position Perry, who is closely tied to Crane, as a frontrunner for the interim party leadership.

Perry said he does not believe this gives him an advantage over the other two candidates.

UPEI Dean of Arts and political scientist Don Desserud said the situation and how it has played out is bad for the party as a whole.

“The optics for the Conservative party are not good,” he said.

“It looks like they’re more interested in the internal fighting than they are in leading the province, and as a consequence they’re giving the government an advantage because they’re off-the-hook.”

Party president Blake Doyle is hopeful the PC party will move forward more united after Thursday’s vote for interim party leader.

“The two positions of interim party leader and Opposition leader are mutually exclusive,” he said.

“Regardless of the outcome, we look forward to the two elements of the Progressive Conservative party working together.”

Olive is a joke. She is wrecking the PC party. When she took the job as interim leader, she promised not to run for the leadership. Then during the leadership race she made deals with Fox and the also rans prior to the convention. If she really cared about the party, why did she go through the whole sham at the AGM if she was planning to resign??? EGO is why. As a tory, Olive please resign and join the NDP, that is where you belong.

This is the problem with the party the back room boys run the show and if they don't want you there they make the job that much harder for you to do. Let the conservative people elect the leader instead of a handful of people then you would have a democratic decision. Only then would all the people have their say. Instead of just the back benchers not saying he is not the right person for the job but let all conservatives in on the vote. After all are we not a democratic society!!!

PEI GUY: I have to disagree. IMO the Good Stuff Comic Strips are made of on PEI is Islanders doing the same thing every Election and Expecting to Receive different Results! I'll bet come next Election Islanders will again Put All Their Eggs in the Same Basket and Truly Believe that will bring about a Different Result!! So let's see those who decide not to Vote Liberal will Vote PC Right? So we'll end up having the same scenerio All Over Again with the exception of a different Color. I wouldn't doubt Islanders may even Elect another Majority! It worked so well the last time eh? What our Island needs is a Government where all THREE PARTIES have enough Members Elected to have a Voice that will allow all Three Parties to work on behalf of WE the People. Will it ever happen? I doubt it as it seems the majority of Islanders are stuck on two colors RED n BLUE! Maybe we should move to the US.

Hal Perry is the Opposition House Leader. Not the Leader of the Opposition. I don't know if it is The Guardian or the party who have screwed up their titles, but that is what we call people in those two, very distinct positions in our system of government.

Olive, This whole display by the party was/is disgusting. you truly are a person that cares for the people. I will not be voting for con-servatives especially now.In my mind the act of bullying that took place was unforgivable. Be proud of what you did Olive.

Hal received the Majority of Support from his Tory MLA's, 4 Votes. (“Olive believes in me and that is great. It gives me a feeling of confidence,” he said.) Oh that's nice. Let's cut back on the Drama before it becomes a Soap Opera eh. NO I'm not a Liberal.

I think the majority is not the number quoted here. Rather lets play this out. If Perry and Myers are running the vote is taken by the other 3 So, in this case he has the support of 2 out of the 5 . hardly a decisive victory. This is the stuff good comedy skits are made of. Who is on first?

Now what the tories have is Olive Pery instead of Olive Crane...Crane will control the opposition office (money included). How can the party unite when the cacus is divided...Alyward and Myers on one side and Perry, Crane and Lavie on the other. Keep your act together and let the past go and move forward to get rid of Ghiz...you are our only hope!!!

Clam -Of course Mr. Myers because behind Mr. Myers is Mr. Currie who is now a backroom boy. Mr. Currie was behind Myers during the election threatening people he put to work to vote Myers or they would loose their jobs. Why do you think Mr. Myers was the first to announce he wanted the job, you guessed it Mr. Currie wanted a puppet.

Amazing the lack of understanding -- this man is 'interim', - everything is "interim", temporary, until the party select a REAL leader, (which they should get on with, never mind waiting ages)-- so pack away the meanness and congratulate the man, - he had the courage to go for it, knowing full well it is a thankless job in the province so mean and vindictive as has been displayed with regards to Mrs. Crane, who has been crucified for no reason.

No...this man Perry is OPPOSITION leader. The interim leader will be decided tonight. So if he doesn't get interim leader, then there will be an opposition leader and a party interim leader. So they party execs are, I assume going to vote for either Perry (which would make him both interim and oppostion leader) or Clements, so she would be interim leader of the party, but because she has not seat, Perry would represent the party in the house as opposition leader. Guess that leaves Mr. Myers out, unless they want an interim leader and an oppostion leader both sitting in the house when it opens.

WHO is making these decisions. This is all we need. Ghiz takes everything to Tignish - even drug the bouncy castles there on Canada Day - away from the Capital City.....moved his body shop to Tignish....anything he can do to buy votes up there. Now we'll have TWO parties bending down to the West and forgetting the East!!! Great job people!!! Shouldn't the members have a say in this? WHO MADE THE DECISION???

These Commenters have no idea what is going on, doing they? Hal is simply Opposition Leader, and may become INTERIM party leader. This is merely and interim appointment until a new leader is chosen by the Party. So trelax people and don't get your shorts all up in a knot. Take the time to learn a few facts before you start blowing hot air. Unless of course you are Liberals trying to maintain an image of confusion on the Tories so people won't notice how totally inept Ghiz and company have been.

DUNDAS SUE------------------------------- Sorry . Position of leader of the Opposition is a function of the legislature/parliament. It technically it has nothing to do with Party leadership. It would be quite legitimate to have 2 different people in the 2 positions. The is a plus to have an interim leader under the present circumstances . It would allow the interim Party leader devote more time to Party organization especially for the Leadership convention. Hal Perry can handle both but more hands would mean lighter work.

Congratulations Hal well deserved. I watched you during the spring and fall Hearings in the legislature and was really impressed with everything you had to say and comment on and hold your Composure when things got a bit rough. I know you will do a Great Job as Leader as it only goes to show you are a Man for the People of Prince Edward Island. Good Luck.

WHO THE HELL IS MAKING THESE DECISIONS?? Wow! If the conservative party had even half a brain they could win this next election but instead they keep bringing in NOBRAINS and now they have just announced a new NOBRAIN leader! Hahahaha. Makes it tough to vote for conservatives when the leader has to wear velcro shoes. Get someone in there that can DO SOMETHING before its to late! Hal perry as premier, has as good as chance as Doug Ryan. Great move Blake and team! Just sent the conservatives back another election.

Who can vote? Simply the MLA's and Executive? Can the membership vote? Do it above board. None of the elected officials should be Party Leader. They would stand no chance in the next election.

Who's using the knives and who's grinding the blades? If one were to push back the curtains, it could be that the real story is not on the front page of today's Guardian, it's found in the advertising insert. For example, if anybody thinks that Plan B is just symbolic of an embarrassing and inept political and fiscal accident, take a look at page 8 of the Road Builder's Association supplement. Then look at the smiling face of Stephen Yeo. Heck, why wouldn't he be smiling? He's planb'd islanders by being Mr. Vessey's chief engineer and "ex-officio" member of the Road Builder's Board of Directors. That, my friends, is the type of thing that's driving PEI politics. Our elected MLA's are just third string puppets controlled by civil servants who are in turn being controlled by the same type of PNP/HST "back room boys" that ousted Olive Crane. Thing is, they're not so back room, are they? The question is, who has the courage to engage with those "knives" Olive speaks about? They're very, very real . . . and they hurt Islanders like hell.
