Prince Edward Island RCMP are urging motorists to stay off all Prince Edward Island roads as freezing rain coats Island highways, streets and sidewalks.
The entire province is now seeing freezing rain and roads are becoming extremely icy in areas.
“Island RCMP are advising motorists that all Island roads are becoming very treacherous,” said an RCMP statement.
“Roads are being described as a sheet of ice and the RCMP are asking drivers to stay off all Island roads until further notice.”

Charlottetown Police are also advising motorists to use caution and adjust their driving for icy road conditions.
There also reports from pedestrians that the sidewalks are becoming covered in ice.
The freezing rain is being caused by a low-pressure system that developed over the Great Lakes region and intensified. The same system is expected to bring strong south to southwest winds with gusts to 90 km/h across P.E.I.

There is a wind warning in place.
But there are no warnings for freezing rain.
“Mixed precipitation is expected today across the province however it will not be persistent. More sustained rain or showers are expected on Thursday however rainfall amounts should remain below warning criteria,” Environment Canada says.
The P.E.I. weather forecast calls for periods of ice pellets changing to a few rain showers this afternoon.
Rainfall amount of five millimeters are expected.
Winds will be south 30 km/h gusting to 50. High plus 2.
Showers are expected tonight.
Winds will be southwest 40 km/h gusting to 70 increasing to 60 gusting to 90 before morning.
Temperature will rise to plus 10 by morning.
On Thursday, expect a few showers ending in the evening then cloudy.
Amount five millimeters of showers are expected.
Wind southwest 60 km/h gusting to 90 becoming south 50 gusting to 80 in the afternoon then west 40 gusting to 60 in the evening.
