Richard Harvey wants you to live out your dreams.

A certified financial planner for 26 years, Harvey prefers these days to be known as the Bucket List Guy.

For the past 18 months, Harvey of Richard P. Harvey & Associates in Charlottetown has been pitching his Bucket List Program to potential clients.

The concept is straightforward: work with clients to create their ultimate to-do list then help them free up enough disposable income to be able to start checking the items off one by one.

Harvey says most people have a vague idea of a few things they would like to do during their lifetime, but they never get around to actually writing them on paper.

Creating a simple, well thought out record of dreams and aspirations, he adds, is the first step to seeing them become a reality.

Harvey will be offering an interactive workshop Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Centre for Applied Science and Technology at Holland College. The workshop is in the Executive Room on the second floor.

Harvey, who has been working on P.E.I. since 1994, says most people are not thinking about being extravagant when they think bucket list.

"They can take baby steps,'' said Harvey, who bills his business as Atlantic Canada's only fee-for-service financial planning firm.

"I've heard all kinds of bucket list ideas.''

Some are as simple - yet precious - as spending more time with grandchildren.

Two of Harvey's clients, on the other hand, were willing to dig deep to check a big item off the list. Harvey helped one couple manage their money so they could spend three weeks travelling across South Africa by train - a trip cost the pair $10,000 each.

Last week, to generate some buzz over his bucket list workshop, Harvey rode through downtown Charlottetown in an eye-catching black limousine passing out free tickets.

Tickets for the workshop are $25 each. They can be purchased at the door.

Harvey notes, however, a special prize will be handed out after the workshop to all in attendance.

    Financial Rip

As a client I don't think this type of business strategy makes sense. Why do I have to pay you to do a financial plan when I know their are many other financial planners that don't charge a fee and I can invest or get the same solutions from them. The money that I pay to you could be saved and put me in a better financial position then you would put me in. I think this is a double dip strategy when I could go to a bank or independent firm and do the same thing for less money. I think this is just a joke.

Financial planning is another major rip off. Not only are they not giving you a fair return compared to what they are making off of your money. You would do much better off buying physical gold (not certificates) and burying it in the ground. The bucket list thing is just another fad made popular by several movies. Financial planners are just vultures (minions) eating the meat off your bones (your hard work). Do not be fooled by this new bucket list gimmick as parasites (financial planners) world wide are reaping in the benefits of your labor.
