A 22-year-old Stratford man was sentenced Monday in provincial court in Charlottetown to serve 120 days in the provincial correctional centre after pleading guilty to charges of theft and breach of probation.

Edward Joseph Phalen was sentenced to 60 days in jail for stealing two cordless drills from Canadian Tire worth close to $300. Those drills were recovered.

He was sentenced to a further 60 days in jail, consecutive to the first sentence, for stealing a bottle of vodka from the P.E.I. Liquor Control Commission outlet in Stratford worth $25.95.

Judge Nancy Orr also sentenced Phelan to terms of 60 days in jail on each of two counts of breach of probation for failing to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

Both of those sentences will run concurrently with all other sentences.

Upon release from jail on those charges, Phelan will be placed on probation for 12 months, during which time he must pay restitution to the Liquor Control Commission for the vodka he stole.

Last Thursday, Phelan received 120 days in jail for multiple counts of theft and other charges.

The 120 days imposed Monday for theft are to run consecutively to the 120 days imposed last week.

Further, more serious charges are still pending against Phalen in connection with a home invasion in Stratford and a break-in at the Southport Motel earlier this month.

Those charges have now been adjourned to March 27.

The court was told Monday that DNA evidence gathered at one of the crime scenes has been sent for analysis and that process will take time.

Phalen has not elected his mode of trial or entered pleas to any of those charges.

The RCMP are still looking for a second suspect in the home invasion Phalen is alleged to have taken part in.
