Souris residents Carol MacDonald and her grandson, Dylan, were on their way to the Moncton Airport Wednesday night. It was supposed to be a joyous occasion since husband, David, was arriving home from working in Alberta.

But the 60-year-old Souris woman and her 20-year-old grandson, who operate The Source store in this eastern port town, never made it.

N.B. RCMP say they lost control of their vehicle on a New Brunswick highway, collided with another car, and died en route to hospital.

“It’s very sad that this happened,’’ said Rhonda Gallant at the Evergreen Cafe. “They were my neighbours and it’s hard to believe.”

A sign is up at the local store advising customers of the sudden death and residents in the tight-knit community are shocked.

The two-vehicle collision occurred on Highway 15 near Grand-Barachois between Cap-Pele and Shediac at approximately 8 p.m. RCMP say the victims’ car lost control and crossed the centre line, colliding with oncoming traffic.

The driver of the oncoming vehicle, a 54-year-old woman from Cap-Pelé, N.B., was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Road conditions are believed to be a contributing factor to the collision.

It was snowing at the time and the road was snow-covered and extremely slippery. An autopsy was scheduled to take place in Moncton on Thursday.
