Former Souris fire chief died Sunday at age 73
SOURIS — A former Souris fire chief died Sunday at his home in the community he served as a firefighter for almost 60 years.
Basil Alexander LaVie, 73, came from a long line of firefighters and was the third generation of his family to lead the Souris department.
His son Colin LaVie, who is the MLA for Souris-Elmira, also became chief.
In 2002 Basil LaVie was honoured with the federal Exemplary Service Medal and provincial Medal of Service for his years with the department.
A memorial mass will be held Thursday morning at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Souris at 11 a.m.
His remains will be donated to the Dalhousie Medical School, as per his wishes, and memorials can be made to the Souris Fire Department.
