SOURIS — Police plan to charge a student with assault causing bodily harm following a fight Tuesday at Souris Regional High School.

Kings District RCMP Sgt. Dave Thibeau says one male youth suffered a concussion while in a fight with another male student.

Thibeau says the fight that “stemmed from a bullying situation’’ which took place over the lunch break in the school hallway. The suspect is 14 and the victim is 13.

Thibeau says police feel the fight was viewed more as entertainment than as an assault.

“The fight was watched by over 20 of the students, which is really a concern to us and was videotaped by many others,’’ he said.

He says police take school violence seriously. Students should report any violence they witness or are subject to, he adds.

“The RCMP wants to take this opportunity to remind youth that all calls regarding school violence will be treated seriously and may result in criminal charges to anyone involved, not just those directly involved in the altercation,’’ police said in a statement.

“Assault is not entertainment.’’

However, Thibeau does not anticipate any charges being laid against students who videotaped Tuesday’s fight or stood on the sidelines watching and failing to come to the victim’s aid.

    The only reason why this incident made the news was because its rare to happen here. We dont need police roaming our school hall ways! For drug deals etc. and mary and the other people who are bad mouthing us for our hockey and soccer for being dirty well maybie put ur kids in A hockey ( non checkin league )

    This whole fight was about bullying and now you see grown men and women on here pretty much doing the same thing the comment 'souris is making our island look like trash" is very rude and hurtful to the staff students, parents and residents of souris. People are saying that "the parents encourage their children to fight" umm that is ridiculous what kind of parent wants their son or daughter to fight? the accusations people are making against souris is hurtful to all of us from souris. you make us seem like the bad guys but look at morrell high school. there was a fight there earlier this week. did you see it posted in the paper? no. look at colonel grey high school. the have a city police officer that walks around the school every singe day. there is a lot more drugs and worse drugs going through that city. you cannot make souris seem like its the only place it happens when in reality in Charlottetown, Summerside, any bigger citys it is a lot worse. this was the first fight in souris regional high school in a tleast two years and now were complete "trash" and really bad people. the people saying that could be mothers, fathers..that just goes to show you how rude and disrespectful you are. you may not like souris as a personal choice but you should NOT go out publicly broadcasting it.

    The fact that this event is such a big deal and the fact that you people have made the decision to MAKE it an event is absolutely ridiculous. Fighting and bullying always has and always will happen amongst teenagers and adults a like, and no amount of student programs or councillors can change that. It's in human nature to take out your aggressions on others, there is nothing special about this whatsoever. Several occurences not unlike this one have gone on in the past year and nothing was done about them. Had this not happened on school property, none of you would be in the uproar you are. I suggest you take that judgemental, assuming finger that you're unjustly pointing at the community of Souris and turn it on yourself. Things like this are a regular happening at the Grey and the Rural. I spend more than my fair share of time with students to know this. You can't make the assumption that Souris is "trash" because of a simple act of violence. As for the kids that filmed it, violence is very entertaining for others to watch. It's plain fact. We can mask it with hockey helmets, boxing gloves, and arenas to try and justify it, but it is what it is. It would be beneficial to all of you to calmly remove the obstructions from your anuses and carry on with your lives with the knowledge that where as you CAN do your part to lower it, violence will always happen. It is perpetual.

    I really wish The Guardian would remove comment section!. Its not the story that's embarrassing. Its the comment section. I have read wayyyyy worse stories that came out of Charlottetown or anywhere else on PEI for that matter. Three bad stories and Souris is a bad place to be. But theft and bullying(I do recall an incident not that long ago of a young girl getting her hair lit on fire) in Charlottetown. And where in the story was there mention of them playing sports??. I am pretty sure kids get into fights all over this Island not just on Souris. Come live in Halifax for week til then quite the complaining. If a measely fight in school and in a drug store is all you have to worry about hahajahahaha. Til your wakened by your neighbours house being gunned down. SOURIS is quiet and great place for raising your kids. In souris when I am home to visit I can let my kids enjoy the outside and not having me worry if I blink they could be gone by pedophile! Or abducted. Til then quite bit**** cause you have nothing to bit** about. Sounds more like whining!.

    If your kid is scared if playing against Souris he should go play baseball or something, it's a contact sport, or he can grow a pair and man up, and of to kids square off how is just one get in trouble, it's a load of bs, if the kid is jumped the yes one kid should get in trouble, 2 kids fight both get in trouble, and why's it matter if people watch, if two people wanna fight they're going to fight whether people watch or not

      Go figure that people of souris would blow this out of proportion. Getting sports involved with this is extremely irrelevant to what happened. It's obvious the school needs to be a little more tight to prevent bullying if this kind of situation happens. But there is always going to be fights and it is probably never going to change. Life goes on so we should just deal with it.

    I went to souris high for 4 years, never seen a fight once, if they were older kids fighting first punch someone would be knocked out but because they are 13 an 14 it's made a big deal. Fights happens black eyes heal, it's a part of life , your will never stop kids from fighting, bring the police into it an all it does it make it worse.

    Who cares.... this is way blown out of preportion.If this happend when the parents or concerned adults who commented on this were in school 20+ years ago both of the kids would get sent home with a slap on the wrist and some detention time. The way people are so overprotective of their children and how they react to violence these days blows my mind. You should be happy you live in a province where things like gangshootings don't happen, this is such a miniscule problem its not even funny. All you people should just shut off the computer and go live your lives and stop bitching and complaining about the choices of two kids.

    I would like to point out that when I made it to Grade 9 at Morell, we were warned of the schools that didn't like us because I played sports. Souris was one of them but I never once had a problem with one person from there. Most of the people I graduated with were very close with other students from Souris. They're not rough and tough other than the way they talk but that's part of their charm! In the 4 years I was at Morell, we had more fights than I can count, drug busts, more bullying than I care to remember and a few incidents with weapons. But if I recall correctly many schools across PEI have had more and worse things than that happen. If you don't know what you're talking about, it's usually best to keep your opinions to yourself.

    What are the teachers being paid for? Why is it necessary to call in the cops? Do union rules mandate that discipline is not their task? Males on the verge of adulthood fight. This is true of all mammals. What is the big deal? A boy growing up without a black eye or a bloody nose won't turn out to be much of a man. This does not belong in the court system. It is part of Nature. Get used to it.

      @kyle If a person walked up to you and assaulted you...who would call??? Yes, the RCMP. Why is this fight any different? A student assaulted another student which is against the law, hence RCMP involvement. It also goes goes against school policy which is why teachers needed to call the police. You must think SRHS employs a bunch of vigilantes for teachers? WOW...did you even make it to high school? And lastly, I take offended to your comment about being a 'real man'. It's people like you that have no concept of what it means to be a man. You probably think boys need to show no emotion, never cry, play hockey, fight and like trucks. Well guess what?....if someone had shown some of these young boys to show emotion and be able to talk and be comfortable in their own skin, we wouldn't be here reading an article about 2 boys getting in a fight. Oh ya, the 1950's called...they want your mentality back!!!

    This whole comment section is ridiculous. Seeing as this didn't involve hockey. Or soccer. This shouldn't be a problem. I don't see why this is bringing down the whole community for one act of this in quite along time at the school. The kid was dealt with in a proper manor and is suspended for the year. But stop looking at the community as the problem. Everyone's gunna have a moment in life were something happens and they are gunna end up In a fight over it. It's life. It doesn't just happen in Souris. Leave the community alone over it and give your heads a shake. Parents had nothing to do with "teaching there kids to fight" and "encouraging it". I'm sure his parents aren't home praising him up on this. And as for sports. Anger runs in allthe teams. Don't beat Souris up cause they can dish out roughness.

    I know the victim very well.. Souris isn't that bad a of a place, really, this stuff happens everywhere. I don't get why people are getting so worked up about it, when they should know this sort of stuff happens everyday at the school their child may go to, especially in big towns. So what, we get a school fight once and we're automatically a pubic disgrace? This is common at all schools. I didnt see the fight, but I was in the hallway across. I just heard a teacher asking about whats going on, but that is all. I had a couple friends of mine who saw the fight, aswell. We're teenagers, we do stupid things, but that's how we learn.

    It was a fist fight people... really! Not a murder or a massacre like some poor parents are still suffering from in the states (then you would something to really talk about for once!). I played lots of sports while growing up in Souris and always encountered someone who always thought they were the "tough guy" no matter what team we played. Sports have contact resulting in tempers flaring sometimes no matter what town you are from or what jersey you wear. Let's look at the positive here, no one lost a life, lessons will be learned and the school is dealing with this as they should be. Enjoy how safe the island really is, please... because the big world outside of the gentle island is not as safe as you have it now! My two cents....

    As a formal SRHS student, I'm well aware that bullying doesn't happen often in this school and when one fight happens Souris gets called trash and makes our island look bad? Get a grip people, I also went to a charlottetown schools which there wasn't a day that went by there wasn't a fight or at least 30 people getting bullied. The town of Souris works together and a lot of there students are very close. This one fight shouldn't cause so much drama, Yes they shouldn't have videotaped the fight but knowing how strong the community and school is they will be talked too and learn there lesson. This community is like a family hurt one you hurt them all, so please don't refer to this town as " the trash of the island" think twice before you say anything.. This children will learn and be ok! I hope they also have a good recovery and we never let this happen again.

      I am quite suprised at how this has become a debate about the caliber of play of the Souris hockey/soccer teams. For the record, the boys involved in the "fight" are not on any of the teams in question. Leave it to Islanders who know nothing of what they are talking about to question and disrespect all Souris sports teams and their parents. Before you leave a comment, keep in mind these are children. The school has taken appropriate action to punish all those involved in the iccident. Many would turn the way and leave it at boys will be boys. I hope the victim (not the bully by the way) who was injured heals well and that those who watched instead of stopping it learn from their mistakes. They are after all 13 year old kids, not the demons many of you are making them out to be. What's worse, check out adults at a bar any night in Charlottetown (or all over PEI for that matter.) Drunk Driving Capital of the Country and all of you are worked up because Souris has decided to stand up against an act of bullying. Go SRHS. Keep up the good work and forget about all these people who cannot even use their/there in a correct sentence.

      If the Souris cliques don't like you, then watch out! The high school is flooded with bullies that pretend to hate on bullies. They learned this from their parents. It's quite ridiculous. Very proud of the police for getting involved. I hope this will make everyone involved learn it is unacceptable in other areas so it's not acceptable in Souris.

      You consider Grade 8 high school? I'm sorry but where were you and your comments when they shut down the feeder schools forcing these kids into the high school? That's when your opinions were needed. Not now and especially when you're insulting such a close-knit community. We are not and never will be trash. That is unless we're finally forced out of our homes to Charlottetown and it's turned into a landfill. And in that case, i'll take the garbage heap, at least it has better views.

      You're right... I am not from Souris however lately with Bear spray assualts, drunk driving charges, teen dances shut down, 'entertainment fights' etc... Souris has been in the news alot and not for good... It certainly doesn't scream 'happy safe neighborhood' or make a person want to visit anytime soon. Which is unfortunate.

      ANON....POUND SAND Not so long ago Souris was the most popular and renowned for its hard working ( and tough) citizens TO WHIT YOU COULDN,T WALK A SINGLE DAY IN ANY ONE OF OUR SHOES, it was home to one of the largest dragger fleets in the maritimes, since when does a lil mishap of 2 teenagers result in the bad reflection of a province

    It's junior high of course boys will be fighting and people will be watching it is great entertainment when you are young. I went to school in CHARLOTTETOWN 15 years ago and students thrived off of school fights at lunch, on break after school... All someone would have to go is go to the cafeteria and yell "fight" and everyone left whatever it was they were doing and RAN to go watch the fight. So what being from the Eastern end or Western End of the island has to do with anything..... Charlottetown schools are no better.. If anything they are worse.

    Someone did try to break it up, and that kid is getting suspended for trying to prevent more damage. Don't throw the book at all of Souris. This is getting out of hand and is completely being blown out of proportion by people who see fit, but have no right to judge from afar.

    It was a schoolyard fight, not genocide. Tone it down and give the kid detention. It's getting blown way out of proportion. Chances are the "victim" isn't so innocent anyway, I've seen enough of these Souris fights to know that. All this introspection and therapists and stuff that has been going through SRHS these past couple of years have been nothing but a waste om money and peoples time. Kids have always and will always fight at school.

    I think this is great! Charges for the offender. My daughter was bullied and assaulted in JR high. The school would do nothing as it was off grounds at lunch and the Charlottetown police shrugged there shoulders and said there really was not anything they could do. Be glad you have the RCMP.

    Me again. This wasn't sports related at all but so many of you Mary's brought it up. Let me tell u a story. My daughter plays hockey and recently they played a team from Queens county. It was good when they were winning but when Souris took over the lead. It was funny how the girls and parents attitude changed. One girl took our girl into boards with stick and flipped our girl slammed her to ice and broke her collar bone. She was kicked out. Now does that sound like Souris is the only rough ones.

    I am reading these comments and I am so disgusted. I'm from Spuris with children in the high school. Our kids are the same as every other kids on PEI. You always have bad eggs wherever it is. As far as sports go not only hockey my kids are in them all and every other team is rough as our kids. One fight in a school doesn't make us all evil. And for the kids who watched, that always happened the only difference is when we went to school we didn't have the fancy phones to tape. Think off it how many did u watch when you were in high school. It will take some gaul to admit that one. I bet half the people bad mouthing Souris are the ones that watched that fight in school but now are PERFECT. With perfect kids. Ps. Wouldn't want to raise my kids anywhere else. Souris is great.

    I think some of the good people of Souris need to get over themselves. And....referrring to a 13 year old and a 14 year old as a 'young adult' is rediculous. They are children. And children CAN be bullies. It needs to be stopped. I commend the RCMP for taking action, and saying they will take action in the future for any other instances of this nature. This is long overdue. Often, but certainly not always, the children who are bullies, have parents who are bullies too. Whether in the playground, or on the ice, bullying is ALWAYS unacceptable. And no matter how versed on expressing themselves verbally some of these parents may have learned to be, in order to try to shift the blame to anyone who expresses disgust and dismay at this type of behaviour........it does not change the indefensible act of bullying by ANYONE! Criminal charges are certainly the way to go. The bullies, both children and adults, may eventually change their ways if they are held criminally responisble for their behaviour.

    Honestly, ALL parents should have some blame for this incident. Children are subjected to violence every day, whether that is by video games, TV etc. How can you teach a child that fighting is bad when it is always shown to them. People think that talking (or not talking) about violence will make it go away, but truly it doesn't. Souris folk don't always fight. Stop talking about hockey.

    Well dont throw the book at them but use this as a way of teaching these students that watching a fight without seeking to intervene is NOT APPROPRIATE - we need to change our bully culture. Sure they are only in grade 8 or 9 but if that is where we can stop it, we should. Get some trained counsellors, work with the admin staff and have some small well designed treaching sessions. Just because it has always been that way does not mean it should continue to be.,

    You cannot teach children one thing on one hand and expect them to do something different than what they are taught. You expose them to violent tv, violent, music, violent games, etc., etc.. All of these things encourage violence and desensitizes the child to possible consequences of their actions. There are no consequences in a video game or a violent movie, if anything the kids are being taught that it is cool or trendy. Then we ship them off to school and expect them to be little angels. Give me a break. Parents allow the tv, the school and the internet to shape our children's minds and then we wonder where did we go wrong?

    Why is it that every time there is a story in the paper about a school from the eastern end or a school from the western end, all of the people that live there get looked down upon? I grew up in Souris and have never met people nicer or more willing to help out their neighbors and from what I hear, the same goes for up west. Perhaps if we start remembering that the Island doesn't end when you get outside of Charlottetown city limits and treat eachother with the respect I learned growing up in Souris there would be less bashing on this site. Also, boys will be boys! Tell me there was NEVER a fight when any of you were in highschool, and I will call you a liar!

    I am very surprised to hear about the attacks on Souris and had no idea there was that much encouragement for kids to fight in hockey! I knew that was a problem years ago but that that was over. But I can tell you this. The schools say they have a zero tolerance for bullying and fighting but my kids have been attacked by bulllies and the Souris High School did nothing about it!. Glad to hear the police are involved and maybe things will actually change in Souris and hopefully this will send a message to other schools also.

    When I was at SRHS , there was cliques. You had the nerds , the goth, the popular girls, the not so popular girls and of course the jocks . In a small school you knew everyone even if you didn't hang out with the other clique, we all meshed together nicely. Everyone got along and if someone stepped out of line or bullied some one incidents like this made sure it didn't happen again. Don't take the fist fights away from the kids , that's when the knives and guns will come to school. We DEFINATLY do not need that. Let kids be kids and learn from their mistakes. This is blown way out of proportion.

    We are talking about a bunch of grade 8-9 students here. I would love to watch this happen in a non-Souris school and wait to see all your kids to go running to the teachers, cause they won't go running anywheres, they're going to stand and watch just like anyone else. And this is even if your kid go to a saintly Charlottetown school. Also I'm sick and tired of hearing everyone bash Souris. Come live down here for a few years and then judge. Find something better to do with you're time then to rip on a town that you do not live in and about a situation that is non of your concern.

    Just out of curiosity, who got the concussion? The bully, or the kid being bullied. The quiet ones can surprise if pushed enough. Not that it matter a whole lot since it's a situation that never should have happened.

    This is an unfortunate event to happen. Hopefully the young adult with be ok. I've talked to teachers at SRHS and they have a lot of respect for the students there. Reality is sometimes these things happen at SRHS and other schools on PEI.

    i feel besides JAIL TIME they should be made to pay all the bills that the hurt teen has to deal with fort the rest of his life. they can pay the bill for QEH,EMS,ETC why should the tax payers pay for these dumb ass bullies?

    I soo hope that 'Mary' isnt her real name lol or from Souris.. Looks like she got herself into some hot water.. I think she was usen Souris Bantom AA hockey ad an example. Could of been the only time she has been to a game there and something may have happened its how she remembers Souris.. I have a memorie of Rustico when my son was playing there.. The parents at the game were CRAZY.. but would never call the village down..it was the last time i went to a game there thought!!

    The comments submitted about this story really makes me sick!!! Not once in the story the Guardian posted did I read anything about a hockey player. How did this story turn into battle over how areas on PEI play hockey?? This story is about two males fighting, over who knows what, and a crowd of people looking on and some of them using there cell phones to video the event. And the comment: "Unfortunately, for many Souris people, assault is entertainment" I invite you to come to Souris and meet some of us "Souris people" so we can show you what we really do for enterainment!!

    Why is everyone comparing hockey to a school yard fight? You all realize the majority concussions are caused not by head contact but body contact? The rattling of the brain is the cause. Concussions can happen anywhere from a swing set, to a slip on the ice, to being a passenger in a fender bender. and so on. A little research wouldn't hurt anyone. Everyone pointing fingers. Who's to say the so called "bully" wasn't the one who ended up with the concussion? I'm glad I left PEI. Everyone jumps to conclusions so fast, and quick to hate on each other without looking at their own. Sad bunch of folks. sad.

      Ulfric youre just as bad when you lump all islanders into the same category. Yes PEI is so horrible that we have benefit dances for those in need, you can walk down the street and not get shot or stabbed its so horrible here im glad you left too.

    I think its unfortunate that this fight happened, I am glad action is being taken. I am sure Mary knows this doesn't only happen in Souris but with that being said the story in question is about Souris, which is probably why she's talking about Souris. As a bantam aa parent not from Souris I know my son cringes at the thought of having to play them whether on their home ice or ours. The last game I seen vs Souris not only did 3/4 of parents ( mainly moms) act out with verbal abuse towards our children, laugh but were loudly convincing their children to fight our children. I myself know this happens everywhere, there's always a few in every crowd. But I totally agree with Mary on this particular team. I just think its sad

    As a parent of 3 children in Souris 1 on the Bantam Boys AA hockey team, I would like to say that I do not condone violence or bullying. I also think that pointing fingers solely at Souris for being complacent with violence and physical harm of another child is very ignorant and narrow minded of the person who posted it. Most of the people who live in Souris are warm and caring people. We strive for good things for our children and try to raise them to be respectful and caring individuals. Some times bad things happen here as well as all other places in PEI, that is life unfortunately and we can only learn from it. For "Mary" from a previous post, "many" people form Souris do not encourage their children to fight whether it be school or Bantam AA hockey. We are no different from any other communities in PEI, and I think that your assessment of Souris and its people is unjust and untrue. I am grateful to be teaching my children to be tolerant and forgiving of individuals and their critisim of things they don't understand.

    If this was at a hockey game it would be a totally diff out look.. You expect to see roughness on ice maybe not fighting but checking yess! not only does that happen down East it happens Up West too or at any hockey game where body contact is allowed.. I give the Souris RCMP credit for doing what they are doing.. It needs to STOP and if it takes being charged then that should happen do what it takes to get the POINT ACROSS!! Remember it dont only happen in Souris it happens EVERYWHERE..

    "several students stood by watching and videotaping the incident while the assault took place" I hope these students are disciplined as well. They were 'bystanders' who did nothing to stop the assault and found it entertaining. Schools and parents: Teach kids that they are responsible to intervene or go get help.

    I would like to comment on "Mary"'s attack on the effectiveness of parents in Souris. Ironically, Mary engages in aggressive finger-pointing and stereotyping. As the mother of three boys, one of which in Boys AA, I hope that she doesn't raise her children to stereotype and finger-point as well. I stress the importance of understand, non-violence, and communication in my home.

    I agree Mary , not only hockey though . The soccer fields are a rough place also. I know fighting happens when emotions run over but when you have parents encourage children as they do in sports , is there any wonder how this can happen outside the of sports? Some will say kids will be kids, but it only takes a second to change a life forever. I believe people do not consider consequences when they use force to react. Sad to think one wrong punch, shove, or kick can result in a death ,but it is very real. Hope both student are OK , and they find a more suitable way to settle things in the future .

      Mary How did this become a hockey incident. It was in school and has absolutley nothing to do with Souris Bantam AA. So if you find hockey too rough please put your kid in sewing

    Really hope the parents and Bantam AA coach see Marys comments - As I was reading the article I was having flashbacks to the type of conduct the Souris Bantam AA players have on the ice and am not at all surprised it carries on to the school yard. Our kids hesitate to play the game when its the Souris Bantam AAs its more of a bullying game than hockey game....

      @ HOCKEY MOM, I recall about a year ago, the Souris boys had a scheduled game up West, to which the RCMP had to escort our Souris team to their bus after the game due to the "Up West" team coming after our Souris team in the parking lot. This is a school yard issue, not a Souris VS wherever, hockey issue. As far as the Bantom AA boys go, the fighting on the ice is Island wide. There are parents for every team that should not be allowed to watch a game due to their lack of sportsmanship. There is and always will be school yard fights. I most certainly do not nor have I ever condoned this behavior, but it is what it is. I wish these kids could talk out their issues, but I am thankful that it is only their fists they use as weapons, not gun or bomb threats, such as Colonel Grey HIgh school. Which I'm sure there are NEVER fights there!!! Please. Souris is not the only school with fights on this little Island.

    Fighting will never go away in our society and it has gone on for years. Students that tape this conduct are doing so for entertainment. Taping this activity will help the police charge the persons involved and show who the on lookers are. Back in the 50' s and 60's things were settled with a fist fight. Sometimes a fight settles things before they go too far as we see with weapons taken to school. As for fighting in hockey, this happens when players are unable to take a legal check on the ice and players chirp each other. When we come to realize the high numbers of students put together in schools today 500+ in some elementry schools alone is there any wonder that a fight will occur now and then!

    This is a very rare event for this school to see. all the province thinks Souris is the worst place on the island because of what they "see" on the ice for hockey. Our hockey teams aren't even close to the Sher-wood squads or Summerside. This is the first fight to happen on school grounds in possibly a few years and shouldn't be put out for the school to be ripped into. In schools such as Blue field and Coronal Gray where they have police roaming the halls. This is the least of the provinces worries as far as problems go. Yes the kid suffered a concussion and the fight shouldn't of happened or been taken that far. But don't call out the whole school or town for 2 kids. Look the Town teams in midget before judging Souris teams if ya wanna bring hockey into it Mary.

    @Mary: Come on, every town or city has this going on, whether you like it or not. I hate how the entire province rips on Souris when it comes to positive articles and how people blow negative articles out of proportion. At least Souris doesn't have a Charlottetown City Police circulating throughout our school, looking for potential criminals. As for the hockey portion of things, if you don't like the sport(this involves ALL portions of it, then don't go to the games) The reason you see violence like this is because people are taking contact out of CONTACT sports and tensions rise.

      @honestabe Fighting is not part of the SPORT of hockey. It is part of the goon entertainment promoted by the so called professionals. Their unsportsmanlike behaviour has polluted all levels of the sport of hockey.

    Unfortunately, for many Souris people, assault is entertainment. Just go to a minor hockey game. It is ridiculous how parents encourage their children to fight at these games. I am not saying all parents in Souris are this way but many are, just check out the Bantam AA games. This inicident is very unfortunate. The school and parents could benefit from some bullying courses.

As a "Souris (person)" I can state that I do not get any entertainment from assault and 99% of the town does not either. In time these young adults will learn that fighting and other forms of violence are unacceptable. During that time I hope you will learn not to prejudge entire groups of people based on the actions of some individuals.

      If you really think the bantam AA kids from Souris are actually being encouraged to fight the ridiculous. Look at the town teams before criticizing the Souris squads. I was in a game against Sher-wood in my first year midget where 8 of our players from souris including myself were injured due to dirty "head-hunting" hits from that team. So don't be ripping into the Souris teams and the school for 1 fight where it left the kid in the hospital due to a concussion and i hope the school does something about this. But the fact Souris is a scape goat for the province because of its "bad behavior" when we don't have those issues very much. We don't have drug busts on a regular basis in the school or have police in the school every second day due to problems. Its probably one of the quietest schools for problems and once one incident happens the hole town and school is blamed.

      This incident is very upsetting. Evidently you don't actually know many people from Souris. We do not 'encourage' our children to participate in such atrocious behavior. There are few violent incidences in our high school compared to other schools on PEI. Because it is a rural town you feel the urge to disrespect us? As far as hockey goes, enter any rink, in any town, and you will see the the same thing happening. You really should get out more.

I have NEVER heard a parent encourage their child to fight. What an asinine comment! "For many Souris people, assault is entertainment" ??? Obviously, you have a bone to pick with someone in Souris. Unfortunately, you have made a group of 13 and 14 year old BOYS look like a bunch of "headhunters" to make yourself feel better. You have also insulted Bantam AA parents and a whole town. Hope you feel better about yourself now.

      This is a ridiculous comment, you don't think fights break out at other schools? In town schools there are kids calling in bomb threats, so I guess if we use your way of thinking it's safe to say that Charlotettown residents teach their youth to try and preform a school massacre? I would send my child to a safe rural school long before I send them to a drug infested town school. I've played against teams all around the island and each team is just as rough as the next, what do you expect it's hockey. Stop and think before you embarrass yourself with another dumb comment like that Mary.

    Scary to know that people were watching and taped but i suppose they wouldnt want to jump in or break it up cause then he/she would be beaten or knoeen as the 'RAT'. My Son got the samething done to him in Summerside not a good feeling at all seeing your own child laying on the ground knocked out with ambulance att working on him. WORSE feeling ever!! I do hope the the people or person involved are delt with and should be taught another person body is a HANDS OFF ZONE!! no matter what the trouble is there is no reason for fighting talk it out.. the BULLYING in our schools is unreal and on our streets.. Also believe that the person who was the one fight should get alittle more punishment then the other who was watching n taping!!!

      Ok people the only reason why this incident made the news was because its rare for this to happen in souris it happens all the time in summerside schools charlettown! Not just souris then to say were making P.E.I. look like trash. Other schools like in town who has to have a cop in the hall way so there is no drug deals ETC. stop making such a big deal about a fight. Happens everywhere
