ALBERTON – Emergency services are being disrupted for nearly half the month of January at Western Hospital in Alberton because of a physician shortage.

Western Hospital’s emergency department will be closed overnight for 11 nights beginning tomorrow, Jan. 4

The emergency department will only operate from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. (closed overnight) on the following days: Jan. 4, 5, 9, 10, 11, 16, 18, 19, 24, 26 and 29.

Now on Jan. 13 the emergency department at Western Hospital will be shutdown for a full 24 hour period from 8 a.m. until 8 a.m. the next morning.

West Prince residents with urgent medical needs should call 9-1-1 or seek emergency services at the Prince County Hospital in Summerside or the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown.

In non-urgent situations, all Islanders are encouraged to visit their family physician’s office or a walk-in clinic. Locations and hours for walk-in clinics are available at www.healthpei.ca/walkinclinics.

PEI can only afford 1 hospital anyway. It should have been built in Brookfield next to the compost plant (centrally located). And give free bridge passes to anyone who wants to go to the emerg in NS or NB after hours.

Emergency Doctors? What exactly are the standards to become one on P.E.I?

If you are an Islander and happen to be a doctor, then a medical degree and a job in another province. If you happen to be a doctor currently working in PEI, then you are not a native-born Islander so you must speak a language from another country because Canadian docs don't want to work here.

Ghiz govt isn't interested in getting doctors that are needed no more than they are interested in keeping open ERs. What they are interested in is if they have enough money to give loans to their friends, as for instance Prince Edward Island's only beer brewing company receiving a new $2.14-million loan from the provincial government.

    What's the Problem?

What's the problem? In fact, the 30+ million dollar new Plan B highway makes getting to Charlottetown Hospital 3 - 6 minutes faster (if you don't stop for a Tim's or a school bus). And the best part is, according to Bruce's year end Interview with Hisself, the project only bothers a few minor Bonshaw residents. The rest of us up West here think it's all great! But I don't know, like they say up in Souris way . . . ya think we might a been planb'd too?

This is how Ghiz plans to run PEI. Forget about Rural Islanders....take away their way of life, their EI and every service that they might need and put the money they would have been spent on this stuff and drive it into his and Wes Sheridan's bank accounts and laugh their snobby asses off!! Western Hospital will eventually lose their emergency care, just like O'Leary Hospital did. The MLA's in these areas should be ashamed of themselves for towing the party line and not standing up for the people, voters from their areas and make Ghiz know that what he is doing is wrong!!! Pat Murphy and Robbie Henderson sit back and watch as Ghiz tears West Prince apart!! One thing every Islanders should have learned by now is that you can't trust ONE word that comes out of Robert Ghiz's mouth. What he promises you today, he takes from you tomorrow!!

We do not need hospitals in all communities. It's absurd! Our Provincial population of 140,000 is the size of a small town. The health care model needs to involve and it must change. We do not need Drs. Let's go with nurse practitioners for the front lines. iTunes.

Bang on....either provide the service or don't. What they hate is getting dicked around by Government. and to think Ghiz is in charge of a group that has to do with health care. NO Island representative should be heading that group...due to the fact that PEI denies our own women rights that the rest of the female population of Canada receive. Obviously a bias there....and we expect more from him....HA...all I would like to expect is his resignation of his whole government....but I will settle for the KTOWN crew and Ghiz(if someone is listening)

Pretty bad that you have to consult a schedule to go to a hospital. I was told by a prominent doctor(my doctor for over 25 years) less than a month ago that no matter what 'THEY' tell you, THERE ARE LOTS OF DOCTORS on PEI. He has been a WELL RESPECTED Doctor on the Island for years and extremely active with Administration. He would not lie to me. SO why are we being told differently?

Telling someone there are lots of doctors, is like telling someone there are lots of trades people. There is upwards of 100 types of medicine specialities. Sure there are lots of doctors, but how many of them are Emergency Medicine doctors? You are never going to get a general surgeon to work in Emerg when they are short of staff, so if the Emerg Med doctor wants a vacation that they are entitled to and there is no doc to take the shifts, the Emerg closes down.

Family Physicians specifiically was discussed BECAUSE the person I convinced to move here with me from Quebec over 2 years ago has yet to get a Doctor and he has been on the list for over 2 years. SO....family physicians is what we were discussing...my point....WHO TO BELIEVE ANYMORE????????? SO ....if in doubt....DADDY Ghiz wears it for me EVERYTIME!!! do no hate the player(me)....hate the game(HIM)
