MORELL - A two week interruption didn't provide any changes or surprises when residents in the Community of Morell met Monday night to elect a new council.

The slate of candidates nominated in late October for council elections Nov. 5 was elected by acclamation, albeit two weeks later than expected.

Jean Eldershaw was returned for a second term as chair amid warm applause from approximately 50 residents who turned out for the election meeting.

Returning councillors are Mary Lou Parkman and Wayne Crouse while newcomers include Donna Sturgess and Chris Dunn.

Not re-offering were councillors Sissy MacDonald and Owen Parkhouse.

The early November vote was halted by the department of municipal affairs because the election was not advertised twice in the newspaper.

The same delay affected five other communities Nov. 5 when 69 Island communities were scheduled to elect councils for two- year terms.

Eldershaw offered an apology to residents for the mixup over  the first voting day. An election ad had only run once in the newspaper, instead of twice.

The chair took the opportunity to hold an impromptu village meeting.

She heard concerns about speeding through school zones, broken concrete curbs, ball diamonds upkeep and soccer field issues.

Eldershaw urged residents to turn out and volunteer for various community functions.

Returning Officer Bill Grant of West River reports that chairman Eric MacArthur returns by acclamation.

Also returning as councillors by acclamation are Bill Dehaan, Lloyd MacNevin, Blair MacEwen, and Lincoln MacKenzie. New councillors this term for West River, also by acclamation are, Charles Duffy, and Chad Stretch.

In Alexandra, John Brehaut returns as chair. Also returning are councillors Leo MacMillan, Glen Beaton, Roy Beaton and Fred Osborn. New on the Alexandra council will be Sterling Pasher.

Election results for the Community of St. Nicholas were all by acclamation with Pam Dawson returning as chair. Also retuning to the St. Nicholas community council will be Carol Ann Arsenault, Margaret Perry, Steven Poirier, Jason Woodbury, Gary Myers and Shawn Jones.

In Breadalbane, Margo Dooks will take up the position of chair following the death last month of former chair Dawna MacLeod. The Breadalbane meeting saw all positions filled by acclamation and the return of councillors Kevin Burke, Irene Novaczek, Eric Wigmore, and Glen Titus. New on the council this year will be Joan Sutton.

In Ellerslie-Bideford, Myron Myron Hutchinson returns as chair. He will be joined by returning councillors, by acclamation, Lorraine Barlow, Rod Millar, Warren Gillis, Adam Hutchinson and Leslie Enman. Joining them for the first time will be new councillor Jason Grigg.

The entire former council in the community of St. Louis returns for two more years, by acclimation. That will be Sonny Wedge returning as chair with councillors Frank and his wife Eileen Brown, Juanita Gaudet, and Beverly Gaudet.

Wedge said a goal of the council is to get repairs and updates to the community hall.
