Long time P.E.I resident Om Joshi and his wife Nirmal lit the ceremonial candles Saturday night to begin the annual Hindu festival of Diwali or as some call it the festival of lights.

It is a five day Hindu festival and for Hindus it is one of the most important festival of the year and is celebrated in families by performing traditional activities in their homes. Diwali involves the lighting of small lamps filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil.

The actual date of Diwali according to the lunar calender was last Tuesday, but the Hindu community on Prince Edward Island decided to have its public celebration Saturday night.

It was not just the Hindus, the Indian community, irrespective of their religion participated in celebrating the festival on Saturday. It was nice to see our fellow islanders in large number joining us in the celebration. Thank you all for supporting us.
