Off-duty police officer taken into custody

SUMMERSIDE - An off-duty Summerside police officer was arrested Monday following a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Central Street and Pope Road.

Summerside deputy police chief Sinclair Walker said alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor and there was extensive damage to both vehicles.

The female driver of one of the vehicles was taken to Prince County Hospital in Summerside and later released.

The off-duty Summerside police officer was taken into custody as he was alleged to be one of the drivers.

The officer involved has been on extended leave for the past 11 months.

RCMP were requested to assist in the investigation, which is continuing.

Walker said it is customary to call on an outside police agency to assist in an investigation when a police officer is involved. The name of the off-duty officer has not been released and no charges have been laid, according to an RCMP spokesperson.

No further details are being released at this time.

    Some ppl really annoy me!!!! Why was the tradgady of last November even brought up????For one this story is about a summerside cop NOT a RCMP officer... There for keep your ignorant no good comments to yourself This is a hard time for the RCMP officer that your talking about and his family THERE for they do not need to READ some of these RUDE/IGNORANT comments.. Have some respect if u dont know the family keep any thoughts to yourself I for one know the family and I dont want to read this crap

    You’re so quick to judge, a police officers knows his/her job is on the line when he/she breaks the law because they enforce it. Imagine how his/her addiction problem must have taken hold if he/she is willing to toss away everything he/she worked for. Plus, to be ridiculed and looked down upon by other members during the investigation . No one is above the law and police officers are more quickly punished by the public, co-workers, etc. Did you ever think how many people out there do battle with addiction problems and you think police officers are different. Remember there could be a sad story behind this persons actions.

      Well I think that he should really be punished! Do you want an officer with a severe problem "protecting" our children, carrying a gun, and punishing others for the same crime they were caught doing?? Think about it!! Are these the people that we want to have to count on to protect us when they are the ones doing the crimes?

    it is bad when the guardian has the news before the journal. but no worry folks he will get his job back to be able to arrest more drunks and to protect you and your family. he will be like the driver of ghizzy take a year off with pay and then everyone will forget about it and you are free.

    Seems funny that if it was anyone else that caused the accident and alcohol was believed to be a contributing factor our names, City of residence, blood alcohol level and any other information would be made public right away.

    TO SHANE Guess you don't REED or RIGHT too well lol, the NA officer was an RCMP officer, NOT a Summerside town cop! And he's been at work for some time now......after losing his wife!

    Maybe it would be best to wait a day longer to give the RCMP a chance to do their preliminary investigation before we demand names, charges and convictions ourselves. Then we can break out the tar and feathers.

    I believe Joe Blow is right, ( if alcohol is involved) If a law inforcement officer is involved in an automobile accident while driving under the influence of alcohol his job should be terminated, He has shown he is not capable of keeping the law he's payed to enforce, I do feel sorry for him and hope he get the help he needs before he kills himself or someone else.

    No charges have been laid? If he was apprehended for suspicious DRUNK DRIVING, why are charges not being laid? IT IS ILLEGAL AND POLICE ARE NOT ABOVE AND EXEMPT FROM THE LAW. Of course, no one follows this, police and cell phone use while driving, anyone?

      Hey, Unbelievable - do a little research before you post: Calls to 911 are exempt as are calls from the driver of an ambulance, fire department vehicle or police vehicle. A quick Google got this info from the PEI Gov't website

    The police officer should lose their job!! How can the public follow the laws and rules of the road if the police that enforce those rules and laws refuse to follow them as well!!! I know it sounds harsh....but I know several people who have been caught for impaired driving and they lost their jobs because of it....so in the big picture...someone enforcing the law should lose their job without question....they obviously know better, they were just arrogant enough to think they'd get away with it!
