SUMMERSIDE — Close to 200 Islanders, many waiving placards and chanting “Stephen Harper has got to go”, converged on National Revenue Minister Gail Shea’s Summerside constituency office Saturday afternoon to rally against changes to employment insurance.

They travelled from all corners of the province, many boarding one of the two buses organized to help get concerned Islanders to the rally. Also attending was federal Liberal Party interim leader Bob Rae, whoflew in for the event, representatives from the various unions in the province and those from labour fishing farming and tourism organizations, all who said changes to EI would be a hardship for Islanders and negatively impact this province’s seasonal economy.

“So this is what democracy looks like,” said Lori MacKay, president of the CUPE P.E.I., to cheers from the crowd. “In some way or another Islanders we know, our families, friends and neighbours are going to be affected by the EI changes. That’s why it’s important we stand here today and have our voices heard against these changes.”

The rally was among similar rallies taking place across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Quebec on Saturday.

“Joining in with our sister provinces will only make our message stronger and get our voices heard,” said MacKay. “Scrap the changes. That’s what we are asking our federal government to do.”

Shea, the only Island Conservative MP, had earlier announced that she would not be in the province for the rally.

But a picture of the Egmont MP was pasted on her office door, a picture that was later defaced by one of those attending the rally.

Shea took harsh criticism for allegedly not speaking up for Islanders when it comes to her government’s changes to EI.

“I know that my voice is not getting heard by Gail Shea,” said the union president, who called the changes “detrimental” to Islanders. “I tried to meet with her to talk about what the changes are going to mean to Islanders, the same Islanders that elected her. And there has been no answer. Shame.”

Several Liberal MLAs, along with former Liberal MP Shawn Murphy and Charlottetown MP Sean Casey stood in the crowd as speaker after speaker detailed how the changes would hurt Islanders and the Island economy.

Those attending Saturday’s rally were asked to sign a petition, which will be forwarded to Diane Finely, federal minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, the ministry behind the changes, and were given postcards to mail to the minister.

“So this is what democracy looks like,.” - Lori MacKay, president of CUPE P.E.I.

In August, Finley announced changes to a pilot program that allowed Canadians to work part-time while drawing EI. The new system replaced one that clawed back claims once a recipient’s part-time wages was more than 40 per cent of their EI benefits or $75, whichever ended up being the greater amount.

The new pilot program reduced the clawback on new earnings to 50 per cent. With that program, the clawback kicked in with the first dollar earned versus the 40 per cent under the previous program.

More recent changes to the EI program decrease the weeks of eligibility from 28 weeks down to 23 for those with minimum hours to qualify.

“I challenge her to come back and meet with the people that are here today,” said MacKay. “I can stand here today and tell you very little has been explained to us at this point and what has been explained by the Harper government has not been very accurate. We are still waiting for answers since the first announcement in the spring.”

These types of action from the gov is meant to deliberately make you angry so that later on they can come in and save the day. They use the Delphi Technique, which is based on the Hegelian Principle (look up Hegelian Dialectic). You see, this is what they do. They create a crisis (EI cuts, other cuts, etc) then they let us get frantic about it (protests, letters to the editor, public hearings, etc.), and then they swoop in as our "SAVIORS" to save us from this horrible thing. This is a typical LIBERAL headline coming from a Liberal newspaper. The headline should read this " PEI protesters know that both governments have stopped listening to the people". Instead they want it to be a "PARTY" issue. Guardian, why not give us accurate unbiased journalism, or is it too much to ask for from a LARGE MULTI NATIONAL CORPORATION? Transcontinental is a global elitist corporation with their own agenda. As always, they go into the small areas, buy up all competition, lay off many, then proceed to line their corporate pockets with the wealth our fathers and forefathers accumulated. Our governments lie to us, the media lies to us, the churches lie to us. The few people in this society who are willing to tell you the truth no longer recognize it themselves because it has become all too unfamiliar. What they perceive to be true (and therefore repeat to us) is the lies told to them by previous generations of liars. After several generations of lies does anyone know the truth?

I have lots of spare tin foil hats if you would like one. The truth is you all should be wearing one. I refer you to a new book titled "Everything they told me was a lie". The media are among the "THEY" who are telling us lies . . .And in an engaging new book, AFP correspondent Pat Shannan lays it all out in no uncertain terms . . . His title says it all . . . EVERYTHING THEY* EVER TOLD ME WAS A LIE. Finally completing a work that took four years, intermittently, between exposing false history for THE BARNES REVIEW and weekly investigative reporting for AMERICAN FREE PRESS, Shannan has scored again! In fact, the final manuscript he sent was so big that we had to slice it in half and make it into two volumes. Volume One is a blockbuster, spanning the past half century and covering the unknown facts about the JFK assassination and the still-growing Apollo 11 controversy of the 1960s to 9-11 and the Obama citizenship hoaxes of current times. (We hope Volume Two will follow soon.) Everything They* Ever Told Me Was a Lie explains from the outset exactly who "They" are (only the newest of AFP readers wouldn't already know) and how a cooperative news media, by ignoring facts and refusing to address pertinent questions, allow outrageous lies to meld into definite, indisputable truths.

It's really sad that for the folks who really need the EI system that they put up with this ignorance that some of the commenters display. It's a reality that there isn't enough jobs for everyone otherwise we wouldn't need an EI system. And to all those who figure we all should go west....really I like to see my kids everyday not every 21. We aren't all cut out to go west. And to the rest of ya who say well I paid in all my life and never used EI well I'm sure someone close to you has family, friends, neighbors. In this day and age with no job security I don't think I would ever spout off about never using EI because you never know.

if someone works for only part of the year, then they should make their earnings last for the entire year and not expect tax payers to fund their part time lifestyle. giving ei to these people is and was wrong headed!

Come on folks, this all boils down to the government not doing what it was elected to do. They are elected to take care of the poor and disenfranchised but instead only care for big business and of course themselves. Both the federal and provincial governments have been hijacked by corporate interests. They do not even try to hide it anymore. It makes me sick.

200 mostly union and Liberal Party supporters? LOL! Is that the best you can do? Stephen Harper has to go? Islanders already made that clear when they sent 3 Liberal MPs to Ottawa didn't they. And now you want Shea gone too? Smart move dummies, then PEI will have no one at the Cabinet table. That works!

The great western Wail... She just keeps cutting and cutting and cutting... Harper has always hated the Maritimes and he's systemtically taking any Federal position he can away from there. From the VA Department in Charlottetown, to the Tax Center in Summerside, and his attack on the provinces through EI. He's on the verge of being the head of the biggest population shift from East to West since the 1800s. We've already sent two generations of population to Alberta, and he wants more to fill the void of labour required. Gail turned her back on the voters who elected her, but what more can you expect from a Harper acolyte?

Pretty sure it doesn't work like that considering taxes can be filed 12 months of the year. Sure they have a busy period but that usually lasts at least 3 months.

The View from Martinvale.......... 1. Employment Insurance.............Insurance program that Employer and Employee contribute to.........it is not about looking for " non work " but working when work is available, in times of less work then one qualifys for some " benefit " due to lack of some work in the given time period....surely this is understood! 2. For those who purposely abuse the system and its intent, let the Agency take those individuals to task......and suffer the consquences of fraudlent reporting. Why is this not understood? 3. The General Fund for the collection of EI Premiums ie from Company and Employees should not be dispersed outside of the EI Program unless the Stakeholders are advised prior to this happening........Why is this not understood? 4. The " Unclear signals from Political spin doctors and Government officials " who " Admisister " the program should be silenced and what they are trying to communicate or say needs to be clearly defined and understood to both Employers and Employees......The Tail is wagging the dog here...... 5. It is not about Harper or any other indivvidual but defining in " English or French what is being communicated...........We then can protest or agree on this and change what is happening by changing our vote.... 6. For those who have never had the need to honestly avail themselves of this Insurance Policy they should be thankful that their full employment covers their needs in their home and family. 7. Their is a great disconnect here and the Corporate Masters cannot supply all the re1uired work that is needed in Canada and Seasonal work is a reality in PEI in Farming and Fishing and other Primary Industries.. 8. Stop targeting and stigmatizing employees who desire to make gainful employment in Atlantic Canada and comparing them to Auto Workers in Ontario..you are not comparing like situations........ 8. Will those who we elected stand up and deal with the facts and support those who are " gainfully employed and not abusing the system "....... 9. What will be required to see this happen?

I am blown away with the people who even dare to comment. The EI is paid for by the working people as an insurance for when they no longer have a job until they do find suitable work. If your all so against the Ei, maybe its time that the feds remove the compulsory deductions from the working peoples paychecks asap. People are not being spoon fed, they are simply taking from their EI Insurance that they are forced to pay until their are available jobs with decent wages in the areas they live and are paying mortgages on? Ever try relocating your entire family for free? I thought not. Will you buy my home if I do? You see its simple mats. Move, pay rent and also try and keep up with your mortgage payments on minimum wages or less. BTW, I do hate Harper. He is a vile person to his very core.

I am an Islander and I am willing to fight to prove it. I will survive, never doubt it, no matter what it takes. And you will too. I know I am an Islander because I work, live, play and raise my family here. There may jobs available in other provinces but I will not move because I shouldn't have to, just to get a job. I will take their stuff before I do that. They will starve before my children starve. I will shut down their government before I do that. I will take back our government before I do that. I did not choose this global economy they talk about and I reject it. Give me back a small economy where all Islanders help each other to get through the rough times. Give me back a sustainable local economy before we start selling to the world at large. Give me back my farmers and fishers, and take away your Coney Island.

Too bad our Premiere couldn't bring some good paying jobs to PEI, how much job production has he come up with in the 5 years his term? Nothing, only handouts to his Liberal PALS and a provience riddled more in dept and higher taxes. Our quality of life as Islanders has not improved over his leadership. With higher taxes and more dept only means less quality of living.

these EI changes are going to make it alot harder on the seasonal industry right across the maritimes. I would suggest that all the atlantic Premiers meet with the Prime Minister & his Minister, regardles of the political color other maritime provinces maybe. the Prime Minister talks about making full time year round work and i ain't saying their is anything wrong about that, but i'm not convinced that big corporate tax cuts are going to create the jobs, if i understand it correctly that they may think in ottawa, of course it's politics. not every region can be as well off as Alberta, or any other province in the west , but it won't do any good to destroy another region for the properity of some others.

I think that all the provincial premiers of the atlantic provinces regardless of political color should go to ottawa and give the PM and his minister the facts on maritime canada. we are not Alberta, BC or any other wealthy province in canada, but it is very inportant to keep our seasonal industry protected for it is an industry that contributes to our economy; regardless, if it maybe seasonal i don't dispute the fact that year round employment is better but that is not the reality for every province. it seems we have a PM more interested in corporate wealth at any cost i don't think corporations are much interested in creating jobs one example is Bell Canada anytime you phone for service they would rather have a computer take care of the customers concern and it is very confusing to try and get a human to talk to than a machine.

Well said Bitter Islander. Also, even if you do quit and file for EI, A) you'd better have a darn good reason for quitting because they will be contacting the employer and B) it will take at least 4 extra weeks for them to investigate the matter. If not longer since they've cut so many processing jobs in PEI in the last year or two. If you ask me, EI has no gravy. Just dry meat and potatoes.

@ Bitter Islander: I never said it was all gravy on E.I., nor did I say I mind paying premiums, so settle down. People do quit their jobs, and they still get their E.I. They may get penalized a few weeks, but they still get it in the end. My employer has to bring in foreign workers to fill positions because so many locals just want enough work to get back on the dole. I'd be willing to bet that half of these protestors would fall into that category. It's the 14 week "stamp collectors" that really need to be cracked down on.

@Jamie: Not sure where you work but if they 'have' to keep hiring foreign workers they are doing something wrong to only raise their interest. I've been on this island for 4 years an yet to find year round work that is not a call center of food/beverage service. Sometimes you gotta take what you can get and more often than not it is temporary employment. Also, If you Quit the put a full out investigation as to why. If it turns out not valid you get nothing. You sure your employer isn't just helping people get their stamps, possibly including the foreign workers. Ever actually ask them why they don't hire locals year round? Sorry but it just doesn't add up.
