The engagement party was held on P.E.I. so let the speculation begin as to where the wedding will be.

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf, a summer resident on P.E.I., and long-time girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert are engaged to be married. The happy couple staged a surprise engagement party for friends and family in a private room at the New Glasgow Lobster Suppers on Sunday night.

Mike Forrest, manager of the New Glasgow Lobster Suppers, said Tuesday the staff had no idea.

“We found out basically at the same time as all the guests found out,’’ he said.

Cuthbert, 29, is no stranger to the public eye. The actress has starred in the former hit series 24 with Keifer Sutherland and is currently appearing in the ABC sitcom Happy Endings.

Cuthbert tweeted “Happily, happily, happily, happily engaged!’’ shortly after the announcement. “This has been the most amazing weekend ever.’’

The couple has been dating since 2008.

Forrest said the couple made the reservation for Sunday’s special announcement about a week ago.

“We weren’t aware of anything with regards to wedding or an engagement. That was their celebration. They had friends and family who were here.’’

Forrest said there was no talk about when the big day will be or where the couple will exchange vows but there’s little doubt the Maple Leafs defenceman has a special place in his heart for New Glasgow.

“Dion has dined with us throughout the summer over the last few years. He’s definitely no stranger to us here at the suppers but, as a business, we’re very privileged to have the honour of them being here.

“They’re a private couple. We’re just very privileged and honoured they chose our location to celebrate with friends and family on their special moment.’’

I always ask myself what is wrong with Islanders like you SIGHS! Is your life that sad that you need to bring down the lives of others or the quality of The Guardian? BOTH Mr Phaneuf and Ms Cuthbert are two wonderful people who have given much more to society than you ever even dreamed of! They are huge supporters of programs like Sick Kids and have made countless donations to studies for several different types of cancers and sicknesses. I hope that you and your family appreciate what people like this young couple do for us, the general public, and realize that being jealous and petty of their status is just a statement of how sad and pathetic your life actually is! CONGRATS TO BOTH OF YOU ON YOUR ENGAGEMENT AND PLEASE IGNORE THE CLOSEMINDEDNESS OF SOME ISLANDERS....THERE ARE STILL SOME OF US THAT CAN BE HAPPY FOR TWO GREAT SOULS. A LONG AND HAPPY LIFE TOGETHER FOR BOTH OF YOU!

Anytime after the regular season should be fine for a wedding date.

Two years left on his contract. Within the next 24 months either a trade or free agent signing with the LA Kings or Anaheim Ducks and including a no-trade clause. He currently doesn't have a no trade clause. Trade him to Columbus for two years. Might learn to be respectful after 3 poor years trying to lead the Leafs

So, an Edmonton boy and a Calgary girl proclaim their love on PEI. There's something very comforting about that - perhaps it's just a Gentle Island type of thing? May they both find peace and happiness and may they both use their talents and influence to better themselves and others.

Wally: It's because both his parents are from Summerside and he has family here.
