The Atlantic cruise industry got a boost Monday thanks to $350,000 in funding from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

Minister of State for ACOA Bernard Valcourt made the announcement at the Atlantic Culinary Institute where he said the money will help a growing industry that attracts people to ports throughout the region.

“Well, they bring thousands and thousands of visitors who come ashore and they do spend money in our communities and this creates jobs,” he said.

The total investment for the Atlantic Canada Cruise Association’s (ACCA) three-year marketing strategy will be $1.14 million with funds from several sources, including provincial governments.

Provincial Tourism Minister Robert Henderson said P.E.I. is contributing $25,000 as its portion and the other Atlantic provinces will provide funding based on the size of their respective cruise ship industries.

“This is an opportunity. There’s major economic spinoffs that come to the province,” he said.

ACCA chair Betty MacMillan said most of the cruise ship traffic comes to Atlantic Canada in the fall, but the funding will be used to try and help change that.

“Our biggest objective is to sell Atlantic Canada as a three season, family friendly destination,” she said.

waste, waste, waste----more meetings, more travel, more employees to feed when more money becomes available, --- all for naught-- if you were cooped up on a ship, albeit with all the services and entertainment you would ever want, and only let off now and again, - what would you want to do----go and sit in a theatre? run and buy a trinket maybe, but mostly you would want to either walk or take a tour , see Province House or something like that. These are all being done now, so what else could we possibly dream up to spend tax payers money on, --- would it be possible to just leave well enough alone for once, -- the greed for more and more is a great motivator, especially when there is unlimited access to money by taxing the daylights out of us. The Consv. Gov. is getting to be as bad as the Liberals were. - Save for God sake and be sensible. The greed can never be satisfied,--- and the people hired have to justify their exsistence, - all conspiring to keep the average Joe on the tax treadmill.

"Nitpicker" - The 4 P's in Marketing, the Marketing Mix are Product, Price, Place and Promotion. I know that for many years, the Province, the Dept. of Tourism have been Marketing OUR Product of Anne Of Green Gables and other Island Tourist Desinations, including Canendish Green Gables & The Confederation Centre of The Arts "Anne of Green Gables play" including it's entire Summer schedule, Places to Dine, Shop, ETC. Promoting this Product in high gloss Bouchures and Pamblets in China. ONE would think and god only knows the Co$t PEI would be spending Promoting other 'high gloss Tourist Book Attractions & Brouchures Promoting the Confed Centre to all world-wide Cruise Company's. If the PEI Gov. is, well it's Co$ting Us a H of alot of $$$. A better bang for the $$$ I would think is to let the Cruise LineS Companie$ communicate with PEI Gov./Tourism, let them Pay the big Buck$ to promote their Cruise Ships destinations with the usual PEI cruise ships Greeters further promote Island Tourist Attractions Products and Services. THINK = Price = Cost. Internet/Google Search The Markting Mix aka The 4P's of Marketing to better answer your question and learn about the exicting, interesting world of Marketing a Product which can be a tangible IE: the purchase of an Anne doll, hat, or book - tangible products or intangible products IE: A Confed Centre Box Office tickets service, a taxi or a dry cleaners OR a travel agencey service. - services.

No need to promote the shows to all world-wide cruise companies, just the ones that are coming here. Nothing complicated, no glossy brochures. Just offer a show(s) as part of the ship's shore excursion package.

This is a great thing for buisneses around Charlottetown I agree , but for myself I fish lobsters off the charlotteown harbour one nice calm evening i see this cruise ship starting to head west leaving charlottetown harbour . As I was trying to juggle my lobster gear out of its way I noticed this dark brown track (approximateiy 150 feet wide at the stern of the ship , and half a mile behind it as it passed I wasn't long figureing out what it was . The (stink) + toilet paper as it passed , but i guess the sewer tank wasn't finished been dumped because the brown track continued on for three quarters of a mile after the ship passed . Hopefully something can be done about this but who knows Charlottetown is famous for the same thing.

Does the Confederation Centre, tapped for cash apparently, ever market its shows to the cruise ships? Why not put on some matinee shows when the cruise ships come to town? With a ship with 2-3000 people you should be able to easily sell out a place like the Mack, the smaller theatre or even put a few butts in the mainstage theatre.
