A 46-year-old Quebec man has been given a 30-day conditional sentence for passing off counterfeit clothing items at a store in Cavendish last summer.

Jason J. Bregman, of Cote St. Luc, will be required to remain in his residence at all times, except to work, to attend appointments with his probation officer, or for other such reasons as may be approved by his probation officer.

Bregman will spend 12 months on probation, during which time he must perform 200 hours of community service work.

Provincial Court Judge Nancy Orr also ordered the accused to enroll in a business class dealing with ethics.

He is to refrain from having any items in his possession that are counterfeit.

The charge against Bregman was laid after police found t-shirts and hoodies in his Cavendish store that carried designer labels but were in fact knock-offs.

Just over 90 articles of clothing were seized last August.

Those items have been declared forfeit.

This is the second time Bregman has been charged with the same offence.

A much larger quantity of counterfeit clothing items was seized in 2009 from stores he operated here.

A crime of greed is best detered by a fine based on the profit reaped. The judge should have considered how much money was ripped off and levyied a fine for each and every item sold. It is off season and the miscreant has time on his hands. The sentence means nothing to him. But money out of pocket would impress Mr. Bregman. It would not hurt the public till either.

...plus he should not be allowed to sell retail in PEI....ever. He must think we are gulliable or something....but then again someone must have been purchasing his inventory. Ridiculous....anyone who is caught up in 'brand names' will pay the price (pun intended).
