A group of Island comedians and musicians are hoping to use the power of laughter and music at a benefit show tomorrow night to help bring aid to struggling Somalians.
Organizer Mike Currie said he hopes to aid the tragedy-stricken country in the Horn of Africa by raising funds at The Alibi Lounge on University Avenue Tuesday night.
Somalia has been faced with a famine, which has left thousands dead and millions more in danger of starvation. The famine has also triggered fear of a cholera outbreak in the country.
Currie said he decided to organize a couple of benefit shows when he had heard about the country’s struggles in the news but didn’t see many people raising funds for aid.
“With it being the summer, and with a lot of different things going on, it seemed to not be getting much attention, he said. “But where I work, there are people who’ve been affected, who’ve either come from Somalia or still have family there.
Currie then approached several Island comedians and bands to see if they were interested in performing at a couple of shows to help raise funds for relief.
Comedians Taylor Carver and Matt Stewart both said they were thrilled to be able to help with the show.
“I’m very happy, to be part of something with a great lineup, great venue and great cause,” said Stewart.
Carver added that he’s looking forward to using his comedy to help out with a worthy cause.
“Stand up comedy is really insular,” he said. “So if you get an opportunity that reaches out a little more, it’s a good idea to take it. Plus, I like everyone I’m performing with too, so that’s nice.”
The two comedians will also be joined by Derek Bondt and Francois Weber, along with local bands, Racoon Bandit, The North Lakes and The Robots.
The first show raised about $1,500 in donations last week at The Globe on Victoria Row. All proceeds from both shows are going towards donations.
Currie said the group’s goal is to raise about another $1,000 Tuesday. He is in talks with the Canadian Red Cross in hopes of getting that number matched by the federal government, for a hopeful total of about $5,000.
Doors for Tuesday’s show will open at 8 a.m., with the comics hitting the stage from 8:30 to 11 p.m. After that, the bands will take over until closing time.
Currie said he hopes many Islanders can make it out for a laugh, some good music and a great cause.
“I’d also like to thank The Alibi and The Globe for donating their venues and to the comics for donating their time,” he said.
