RICHMOND – RCMP has released the name of a 49-year-old Kensington man who died in a motor vehicle crash in Richmond Wednesday evening.

Ronald Elmer McCarville was killed when the Dodge Ram he was driving left the road and struck a tree on the front lawn of a residence.

An autopsy is being conducted Thursday morning in Charlottetown. Police say further details will be released when the autopsy results are known.

The accident occured about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday just west of the intersection of Route 2 and the MacIsaac Road, some 25 kilometers west of Summerside.

RCMP spokesman Sgt. Andrew Blackadar said Wednesday that police began to follow a Dodge pickup truck as it drove erratically, but not fast,  through Miscouche. The vehicle would not stop and began to speed up, so police stopped the direct pursuit and arranged to intercept the vehicle further along Route 2.

About 10 kilometers past Miscouche another police cruiser tried to engage the truck but again it would not stop and again began to speed up.

"They were coming into Richmond, into a 60 kilometre (per hour) zone," said Blackadar. "The police officer knew that and again abandoned the pursuit. A short distance up the road they found the vehicle had struck a tree."

Emergency crews had to clear several limbs from surrounding trees in order to free the vehicle.

In a statement issued late Wednesday, police said the driver of the vehicle was not wearing a seatbelt. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this crash.

Accident re-constructionists are assisting members of Prince District RCMP in their investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

RCMP was assisted at the scene by Island EMS, Wellington Fire Department and the Department of Transportation.

Route 2 was closed for approximately four hours while investigators examined the scene.

Sorry you are not having a good day but think about the rude comments you made. I don't think anyone is to blame for this. It is not even clear why this accident happened. People are too quick to assume and blame others. I don't know this man but I am a nurse and I feel for this poor man and his family. If you were a diabetic you might understand. It is sad to think that this poor man lost his life, his family and friends and probably wasn't even aware what was going on around him. Let alone the police attempting to stop the him. Thankfully no one else was hurt in the process. My thought and prayers to the family.

Ron had severe diabetes and had been known to have fits of hypoglycemia...I've seen him "bottom out" before due to his blood sugar being too low...it's extremely sad how much people jump to conclusions that he was under the influence. RIP Ron...you meant a lot to me and my heart goes out to your family and friends.

I am fairly confident that the results of the autopsy will show that Mr. McCarvill had medical issues and that he had no more control over what was happening than the police did... I do not believe that he was "running from the police". He probably wasn't even aware of what was going on. He has been a diabetic for years.

Diabetes does not make you drive recklessly or run from the cops. The cops did say that they didn't believe that alcohol was a factor. I understand that he was your friend and that you are standing up for him, that's admirable.

    J. MAC - let's keep in mind that it's fairly easy to prove either way, considering the GPS technology that police cars are equipped with; not to mention the recorded radio transmissions with their Comm Center and dash board cameras.

Let's not blame the police, if they can't chase people then everyone would run, which would reduce the chance of getting caught, then it would put the crime rate up.My heart goes out to this man and his family and we should be thankful no one else was hurt.

Police always say that the crash occured " moments ' or 'seconds ' AFTER they called off the persuit. That way they can't be held liable

The police/rcmp should never be liable for an accident occurring from a pursuit. The person in the pursuit should never of ran in the first place. Deepest sympathies to the family .

I was listening to the scanner and it was longer than moments/seconds that the pursuit was called off before the accident... irregardless of when the pursuit was called off this is a terrible tragedy and the police were only doing their job! Trying to get an ERRRATIC driver off the road before he killed someone else....

So naturally it's never the truth and you would rather they just let erratic drivers endanger you? Whatever. How about you say this is a tragedy and leave it at that. Or become an officer yourself so you are in a position to judge.
