FREELAND – A 57 year-old man from Surrey, B.C. was transported to Prince County Hospital in Summerside by ambulance after a school bus driver came upon him in a wrecked vehicle off the Murray Road in Freeland Wednesday morning.

Prince District RCMP spokesman Sergeant Kent MacKay said the bus driver was on his morning run, at around 8:10 a.m., when he noticed skid marks on the road and saw the brush in the ditch was broken apart.

MacKay said the driver parked his bus and went to check. About 20 meters off the road he came upon a 2008 Honda Civic. The car had gone off the road and rolled twice. He found the car’s driver asleep inside.

Police haven’t determined the time of the accident, but believe it occurred overnight.

MacKay said the driver didn’t have a cellphone to call for help so decided to remain in his vehicle.

The driver was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries. The rental car he was driving is a write-off, MacKay said. All of the airbags had deployed on impact.

MacKay said it appears the driver over-corrected after losing control of his vehicle. The vehicle skidded across the road and into the ditch.

Police do not anticipate charges.

@ Erroll Smith.... The man who was in this accident on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning was found dead of natural causes on Thursday after his release from hospital. His accident was due to a health problem. Try to think positively next time instead of always trying to find the negative - people of your ilk are dragging this island down into the gutter.

I agree with Brian yes there is not alot of people out there that would stop and congrats to the bus driver, if he hadn't of seen the skidd marks god only knows how long this man would of been there and i know if i was in an accident and i had to sit and wait for someone to come , from the shock of the accident and the long wait i would go to sleep too, I am so glad the man wasn't seriouly injured , someone was watching over him, and again to the bus driver you are a great person and you should be very very proud of what you did for this man...don't change , I 'm glad I know there is at least one man driving our children back and forth to school that is a great and caring human being. thanks....

To Erroll Smith I don't think there's anything wrong with this story. It says the accident occured through the night and he had no way of calling for help, most likely there was no sign of help nearby and possibly being a tourist he didn't know what type of animals could be prowling....eventually while waiting and hoping for another motorist to find him,he fell asleep!(probably exhausted from the accident and staying up waiting for who knows how long)

I presume he had his seat belt on. All the airbags probably deployed including the side panel airbags eliminating any head injury. Goes to show how safe the late model Civics are. Glad to see he wasn't injured seriously. Two things, never drive when tired and reduce speed your speed.

It's amazing this person wasn't seriously hurt and to the bus driver who stopped, you did a great job in helping this person out. So thanks for being a good samaratian as there is not much people who would have done this.
