A mystery fifth candidate has entered the race to be leader of the Progressive Conservative Party and now The Guardian can confirm it is Jamie Ballem.

The party held a news conference late Friday afternoon to introduce their candidates.

The four known candidates – Olive Crane, Jamie Fox, Peter Llewellyn, and Fred McCardle – were in attendance.

During an interview with the media following the news conference, Sylvia Poirier, president of the PC Party, confirmed an application had been received from a fifth candidate.

That candidate met the 4 p.m. deadline but because the party has not approved his application, they are not releasing the name of the candidate.

Sources now confirm that mystery candidate is Ballem.

Born in Marshfield, Ballem served as environment, energy and forestry minister under Pat Binns's Progressive Conservative government. He was defeated in the 2007 provincial election.

Ballem now operates an energy company that promotes the development of wind power, something he also did while he was environment minister.

... The race is now on for the PC leadership. Full details in The Guardian on Saturday.

Do you honestly think that Jamie Ballem is running for personal gain??? He could make a lot more money, and have a lot more stress staying in the private sector. If he runs his work as a consultant to renewable energy firms is over and even if he wins he takes a pay cut. He is running because the current Government is over spending, and without any vision for the future. Yes the economy is struggling, so it is time for the Government to spend some extra money to stimulate the economy, but spend that money on projects that will create long term growth, not more minimum wage jobs that disappear as soon as we have to cut spending to get the budget under control. Mr. Ballem is running because he cares deeply for PEI and knows that the path the current administration is taking will only grow the debt of PEI to enormous levels and weaken the economy long term, leaving the province with very few options. Any Islander would be a fool to think he is running for personal gain.

Mr. Ballem doesn't even have his own wind company. He is a wind power consultant. How is he supposed to sell wind power to his own company when he doesn't run any actual turbines himself? I think you need to read up on your facts before posting something like this.

Glad! You coudn't ask for a better man then Jamie Ballem. Jamie is a man who respects the Island's tradtions and heritage while also being a visionary who recognizes the needs of the future.

oh oh , I hear some Libs sounding a little worried here. You can always tell when they are in that state. The negative posts come out Ballem and Llewellyn ,one will be the next Premier of PEI. Someone had better get big Ronnie on a diet , he's breaking down all the bridges!!!!!!

You're wrong, Call Me Surprised. We're are really concerned Islanders who were hoping for a better alternative. I admit I had high hopes for Ghiz to straighten things up following the mess the Binns and his buddies, including buddy Jamie Ballem left, but Ghiz has been a major disappointment and seems to be sinking the Island. I had hoped the PCs could have mustered up some talent other than someone with all that baggage. Crane is good, but for some reason, you Tories won't support her. You must feel a little threatened by her and the secrets she knows. Llewellyn is a good person, but seems more Liberal than Tory. If you bring Ballem back, you would be condemning Islanders to another four years of Ghiz. If we are in a "state" it's because we have been betrayed by both parties and it feels like there is no one to trust.

Congratulations Jamie! A little back room politicking is just the ticket to continue the dumping down of Island politics. You will be a real asset running on your stellar tenure in politics. Under your watch in Energy, Environment and Forestry. Our cost of fuel rose to the highest in the country and foreign investors took away our wind resources. Environmental illnesses such as asthma and cancer grew to epidemic proportions, Our water became polluted with nitrates and pesticides. Fish kills became the daily story and chlorination levels of city water skyrocketed. Our forests continued to be clearcut and the % of crown owned land dropped to embarrassing levels. In fact, during each year of your participation in government the Sierra Club rated our Energy, Environment and Forestry policies as pitiful. Imagine what you and the backroom boys will do if you control the whole Island! Your gang campaigned on the promise of patronage and you delivered like no other government could ever dream of. Now with your foreign investors you, Mike and Baggy are probably busy buying up those votes or maybe you're hoping to raise the level of disgust so high that no one pays attention. 'Mystery Candidate,' my arse. Just another round of backroom bs.

Way to go Jamie its about time we had a real leader in there to put a stop to guys like Ronnie. Who in there right mind would have all this construction going on during the day with all of the visitors around the island this could all be done at night . You will have my support Jamie.

Jamie Ballem has got too much Binns-Baggage. And besides, he was obviously using his previous Cabinet post to position himself for personal gain back in the private sector. He promoted wind energy at Minister of the Environment, and now he's in the wind-energy business. Makes a person suspicious of this run for leadership. I wonder what cushion he'd try to put in place for next time he falls.
