Charlottetown police made several arrests Tuesday night in relation to thefts around the city.
The first arrest came while officers on foot patrol spotted a 24-year-old man going through a car on Prince Charles Drive.
In a second incident, an 18-year-old man, 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl all face charges of theft and possession of stolen property after police found them with several stolen items including a DVD player and clothing.
Charlottetown Police Services Deputy Chief Richard Collins said the department has made about 12 or 13 arrests recently on property related offences.
“We’re making a concerted effort to address this issue.”
There has been a jump in break and enters around the city in what police are calling a crime of opportunity when windows or doors are left open and although it is something that has them concerned they have been making arrests, Collins said.
“We’re starting to make a dent into that.”
Collins said people should lock their doors and keep valuable items out of sight in their vehicles to help avoid thefts.
“We’ve arrested a number of people, but we’re not saying this is over by any means.”
Along with the arrests, Charlottetown police reported several more vehicle break-ins overnight Tuesday with an IPod, GPS unit, sunglasses, a digital camera and a purse stolen from cars throughout the city.
