SUMMERSIDE — P.E.I. celebrated Canada’s first Korean War Veterans Day Tuesday in Summerside.

About 20 veterans marched in the parade from the Summerside Legion to the cenotaph off Summer Street. Members of the 200 Summerside Wing of the Air Force Association of Canada and the Summerside Legion’s colour parties led the parade.

Veterans from across the Island, as well as one Korean War veteran who was visiting from British Columbia, participated in the ceremony held at the cenotaph.

Betty Howatt, who lost her brother in the Korean War, addressed the veterans about their long overdue recognition and a wreath was laid in memory of the eight Islanders who paid the supreme sacrifice.

The Korean War lasted from 1950 to 1953. About 26,000 Canadians served in the war and more than 500 were killed.

Sargeant Cyrus Sark was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He earned a Bronze Star. He passed on in 2002 and would be so happy that PEI is finally recognizing the Korean War Veterans. As are all Veterans, he was very proud that he was able to serve his Country and was an Honorable and Courageous gentleman....as well as a very gentle man.

"... long overdue recognition" for sure! My thanks goes out to these Veterans who were involved in the Korean War. Having had the opportunity to meet several South Koreans, I personally know how grateful they are for the courage shown by our Veterans. And we need only look at their neighbours to the North to determine if our efforts, and losses, were justified.

I think "commemorates" may be a better word than "celebrates" for this headline. don't know about anyone else but I don't tend to celebrate war memorial days. Baaaaaaad writing. Glad these vets got their day though, it's the least they deserve.
