P.E.I. big winner with Regis, Kelly, says Vessey

Tourism Minister Robert Vessey says the exposure Prince Edward Island has received as the result of Live! With Regis and Kelly shooting four shows here is absolutely unbelievable.

“You cannot put a price on this kind of exposure,’’ Vessey said in an interview Tuesday.

Speaking just hours after co-hosts Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa had completed the last of their shows at Confederation Landing Park, the minister said the show has helped spread the word about P.E.I. and all it has to offer to millions of television viewers in the United States and in other parts of Canada.

“We’re very proud of Prince Edward Island and to see it showcased like this, so professionally, so beautifully, it’s wonderful.”

Vessey said the feedback the province has received has been overwhelming.

“Prince Edward Island was the second most popular search on Google Monday. We had to ramp up our own website to three times its capacity to keep up with the inquiries. People wanted to know all about us.”

He said the payback for the $800,000 the province invested to bring LIVE! with Regis and Kelly to P.E.I. could be enormous.

“Look at the attention it’s generated for us.”

Vessey noted newspapers, television and radio stations across North America have been carrying stories on the show shooting in P.E.I.

“The whole idea was to build brand awareness of P.E.I. Regis and Kelly have helped us do this in a very big way.”

Opposition Leader Jim Bagnall said there's no doubt that the show brought some short-term publicity to the province but in the long term it was a lot of money spent on the short term.

“That money could have been put into our health care instead of a three-day event,” he said in a telephone interview from Regina.

“I think our priorities when it comes to spending need to change.”

Vessey said he’s been speaking with a lot of people in the hospitality industry and in retail and they’re all very happy with the economic activity the show has created.

“They’ve never seen anything quite like it.”

Restaurant operator Liam Dolan echoed the minister’s sentiments.

“This has been fantastic,” Dolan said. “The hype surrounding this show, the attention Regis and Kelly have generated in the media, we’ve never seen anything like it on the Island before.”

Dolan said he’s met a lot of people from the United States and from other parts of Canada who came here for this event, including several of the stars and the musicians, and they can’t believe how wonderful the province is.

“I think you’re going to see a lot of people come back here. People told me they had no idea what this place was like before now but they love it.”

More than 8,000 people flocked to Confederation Landing Park to see Philbin and Ripa shoot their last two shows in Charlottetown Tuesday.

The first of those shows was broadcast live, the second was recorded to tape for broadcast on Thursday.

Tuesday’s live broadcast kicked off, as Monday’s had, with glowing praise for the natural beauty of Prince Edward Island and the hospitality that Islanders have displayed towards everyone involved in the show.

Between celebrity interviews with the husband-and-wife team of Harry Hamlin and Lisa Rinna, stars of the new TV Land reality series Harry Loves Lisa, and Canadian-born actress and comedian Caroline Rhea, co-hosts Philbin and Ripa came forward to chat with members of the audience and field questions, all of which they happily answered.

They were gracious and delightfully charming.

We had to ramp up our own website to three times its capacity to keep up with the inquiries. People wanted to know all about us. - Tourism Minister Robert Vessey

Everywhere they turned there were adoring fans holding up signs that said “Regis We Love You” or “Kelly you’re beautiful.”

Highlights of Tuesday’s show included Ripa’s debut as Kelly Anne of Green Gables.

Dressed like L.M. Montgomery’s fabled orphan Anne Shirley in Anne of Green Gables, she was shown making friends with Diana in Avonlea, running in the three-legged-race at the Sunday picnic and clocking Gilbert Blythe — played in this case by her real-life husband Mark Consuelos — with a slate.

The show also featured yet another attempt to convert Philbin into a seafood lover, this time with seafood delights from the Ship to Shore Restaurant in Darnley.

Chef Wesley Gallant offered Philbin, among other things, a fried oyster taco.

P.E.I.’s Grass Mountain Hobos got what had to be the opportunity of a lifetime when they served as the house band for Tuesday’s show. They served up snippets from a number of songs and got to watch Philbin promote their second album.

Band spokesman Josh Ellis said they were thrilled to have the opportunity to play this show.

“It’s a big break for us, the show reaches a huge audience.”

Other highlights of Tuesday’s show included an unexpected guest appearance by the Holland America cruise ship Maasdam which saluted the show with several blasts from its horn, as if on cue.

Although Regis and Kelly have left the Island, the two extra shows they taped will be broadcast today and Thursday at 10 a.m. on the CTV network.

Certainly a lot of good comments posted here , BUT as islanders we have to focus on the overall picture and with this govt. it has been nothing but one bad news story after another ,after another i hope the show generates income for the island like the windmills do , so we can keep our civil service well paid . i know it wont decrease the taxes that are levied on us , i also hope we don,t forget the waste and corruption within this govt. at election time. As far as the million is concerned, Does anyone know what 3 roundabouts cost in a city that doesnt have a decent street in it ?? Please wish us luck ,Believe me WE need all the luck we can get it !!!

I live in Florida and I visit the island every year so the beauty was not new to me. However when my inlaws and my supervisor saw this they said "I have to get to PEI before I die" Great for tourism.

Bravo to all those involved in bringing Regis and Kelly to the island! We were disappointed not to have received tickets in the mail but nevertheless ventured down to the waterfront to just observe the activity-we no sooner arrived than some very friendly volunteers/staff ushered us right in as standing room only guests! Perfect! We stayed and enjoyed the entire taping. PEI lacks a lot of amenities if it is ever going to be a first class or even second class destination. We have a cottage in Georgetown that we visit and spend a lot of money on every year so i speak from experience. PEI needs more attractions, restaurants, flea markets, antique shops etc. Bringing Regis and kelly was money well spent. See you next year islanders!

It was a tremendous boost to Islanders Morale and to PEI tourism! People DO have money to travel......and for those who don't right now, they WILL remember PEI when planning their next trip. Thanks to the show for bringing smiles to so many faces and for promoting our beautiful island!

As a former Islander, I am very disappointed that there was little to no mention of the wonderful golf courses, beaches, farms and great hotels, motels and bed and breakfast places that are available on this wonderful Island. Do hope it will bring in some good tourist travel for those who have not had the experience of seeing this wonderful Island and it's beauty. Regis and Kelly brought much attention to the great sea food, but as usual it was all about Kelly.

What else would Vessey say? He has to toot his own horn and take credit now because when the final numbers come in for the WHOLE Island for the WHOLE year, we'll see how unhappy he will have made the tourism industry.

I live in the US. Every time Regis and Kelly announced a new location shoot, I would shout at the TV "Go to Prince Edward Island!" Imagine how excited I was when they did! My husband and I visited PEI as a "side trip" to Nova Scotia 2 summers ago. We fell in love with the island, the people, the scenery, the food. Not a day goes by that we don't talk about going back there. Our friends and family have grown tired of hearing about how wonderful it is. Now everyone who watched these shows knows, too. I can't imagine that it wouldn't "pay off" in tourism. I'll take a trip to PEI over Hawaii any day.

Hey Jim, With your backward thinking you will be destined to remain part of the Opposition. Maybe not the Leader for long, as you seem to not know the difference between the HealthCare Budget and the Tourism Budget. Money well spent. As for Weird foods, I would loved to have tried Gordon's Oyster Icecream as I have tried a few of the amazing dishes he serves at Lot30. No clubs, burgers or fries thank you very much. A Penguin Burger.....hummm...now thats a thought .

OK jeez I am glad that is over, Regis & Kelly are gone. But that is just my personal feeling on the matter. Given the public investment of one million dollars, it is time to see what monitoring system Vessey's brilliant tourism gurus have in place to measure the results from that investment. How many tourist visits will this produce or help to produce in 2011. Guardian, when is our noble first minister of tourism & culture announcing his monitoring system for the impact of Regis & Kelly? Not internet hits but real people spending real dollars. Let's see it!

I agree with the show being a huge success. I felt sorry for Regis, having to endure people trying to push seafood on him, what ever happened to good old stemmed mussells??? Unfortunately, I also felt this show stole the spot light from Cavendish Beach Music Festival, I read very little on this. We also have to remember to thank the organizers of this event, this event brought in even more tourist, in my opinion, than Regis and Kelly. Very disappointed in the lack of exposure the Guardian gave this concert.

I am disappointed in reading Mr. Bagnall's comment today. In the midst of such an enormously successful event I don't believe Mr. Bagnall's comments will win him many accolades. The Show Today was another Spectacular performance! I don't know how any Promotion of our Island could possibly top Regis and Kelly's three shows from the Confederation Landing Park and the thousands of Fans who were in attendance to watch the two Live Broadcasts! And we have yet another that will be aired tomorrow! Today they put the spot light on our Holland College Culinary Institute with acclaimed Chef, Mr. Grant. They gave viewers a picturesque view of our beautiful country landscape while horseback riding. Kelly and her daughter Leona handled their horses like professional riders! Regis was on the strait to promote our Lobster Fishing and down on Jewell's Farm to promote our PEI Potatoes! And The College of Piping N Celtic Performing Arts opened the show! The cameras spanned our beautiful waterfront park and the Northumberland strait where sail boats bobbed in the breeze! The cameras even covered spectators taking in the Show from atop a roof beyond the park! Now if those people weren't enthusiastic about seeing the Regis and Kelly Show, I don't know what enthusiasm is! We might not see all the benefits in increased tourism numbers this year but I am sure we will see those benefits next year and the years following. And Regis and Kelly have not only enlightened people Internationally as to where PEI is but their shows have hightlighted our Beautiful Island and the many unique attractions, activities, culture and outdoor experiences we offer our visitors. I say Thank You Regis and Kelly and all involved on a Terrific Job! I was truly proud and overjoyed watching the broadcasts! I believe this is the most sucessful promotion of PEI that has ever taken place and I've lived here for 55 yrs.! KUDOS TO ALL !

This was a solid investment for the promotion of the Prince Edward Island tourist industry. Some friends of mine in New York, Florida and Baltimore have called me to comment on the shows polished presentation of the island. In today's tough and competitive tourism market this aggressive type of adult orientated marketing is paramount in maximizing the share of tourist dollars coming to PEI. Promotion of fine dining, great golfing along with pristine untouched beaches and countryside appeals to an upscale tourist trade looking to get away from it all while still being able to access the finer amenities. The gentle family oriented programs with lots of stuff for children have there place, but the real tourist money is located in attracting and providing for the 30 to 50 year old upscale professionals along with the lucrative well healed travelling retired population. Good call for Tourism Prince Edward Island, it's great to finally see you adopting a grown up and mature approach to marketing this beautiful place and all it has to offer.

Mr. Bagnall is one of the few holdovers from the long-in-the-tooth Binns government that succeeded in spending their way to three majorities and were unceremoniously dumped in favour of a younger more vibrant and connected government. Mr. Bagnall is obviously well liked in his constituency, but a smart and reasonable elected official.....he most certainly is not. No matter how you look at it Mr. Bagnall is not only wrong, he displays why his party is not in power anymore. Admittedly, Mr. Bagnall believes the money should have been spent elsewhere......yet he simply said on health care. PEI spends tens of millions on health care every year. Unless Jim has an exact area where this comparatively small amount of money should be spent, which he doesn't, Mr. Bagnall should do what all Islanders are doing and celebrate a job well done.

Yes, this was great exposure but it still doesn't mean it'll help boost tourism. People have NO MONEY to travel. There's a reason tourism is down all over. It isn't that they don't know about the area, it's that they can't afford to come and when the do (on cruise ships etc, they don't buy much. The economy needs to improve before great amounts of people return, no matter what the gov't does. Couldn't agree more, "What's up with the weird food". I don't eat ANY seafood and I have a feeling those items were invented for the show and certainly not on the regular menus around town along with fries, clubs, hamburgers and the rest of the so-so food served.

Why don't you stop speculating and wait for some hard numbers before taking a swipe at the Liberals. Your time would be better spent focused on things the liberals were actually doing wrong.....like the construction debacle going on in Charlottetown. I imagine the last few days for Regis and Kelly were a whirlwind of activity! Between taping the shows, doing the shows, shooting the Anne of Green Gables segment, visiting our fine dining establishments and touring the Island, meeting Islanders on their travels, they must have had a jam packed schedule. Still, everything took place without a hitch or hiccup! It was quite evident their manager and crew were experienced professionals and very accustomed to organizing and providing a First Class Production! I commend and congratulate all ! I will be watching Regis N Kelly every day now as I feel a lasting friendship has been established. So maybe the ratings for their show will also benefit not that need higher ratings!

Well it seems that Jim Bagnall is also slightly misinformed. From what I recall the Tourism advertising budget was cut and then we added this $800,000 to the budget for the Regis and Kelly show which brings us back to about the same we spent on advertising last year. As someone else said last week, tourism has a budget and health has a budget. We have to invest in BOTH to keep things running.

Clam cupcakes, oyster tacos, oyster icecream? I have lived here my whole life and never heard of these.. Americans will think we are weirder then we actually are and think these foods are normal everyday foods. Seriously folks. who eats those things on a everyday basis? Bad enough that a US friend asked me years ago if we had penguins and lived in igloos, this would reconfirm that we are 'weird'.

You missed the point of what they were doing. They were exploiting Regis' dislike of seafood. The gimmick was for each chef to come of with ways to make the food palatable to him. Seafood as a New York hotdog, taco, cupcakes etc.... As for weirdness, ever been to the US? They have regional culinary oddities too.

I addition to the tourist attention Regis and Kelly generated for Islanders it's also generated attention for your Newspaper too and that Mr.Jim Bagnall will better inform North Americans regarding your government's activities regarding your Healthcare and their other activites and decisions/actions. There are many other people like ourselves whose decision regarding travel destination decisions include how it's government/politicians/courts treat their people of all demographics especially their most vulnerable such as the sick/disabled.
