FREDERICTON - Parents of New Brunswick's youngest hockey players will have to brush up on their behaviour at the rink.

The general manager of Hockey New Brunswick says the organization plans to introduce an online course in September. Brian Whitehead says the course is mandatory for any parent registering children 4 to 8 years old.

Coaches and volunteers won't be required to take the course.

Whitehead says parents won't be charged a fee. In Nova Scotia, a similar program that began last year cost $12.

The program will cost Hockey New Brunswick about $30,000 annually.

It is pathetic! If parents can't behave, kick them out for the season. Simple as that. Hockey is for the kids. If Hockey New Brunswick has 30,000.00 extra dollars a year, they should be putting it into our youth, not spending it to teach grown adults how they should behave in front of children. If nothing else, make the parents pay for the course at least. I realize most parents are decent, but unfortunately, due to the few who are obviously missing a few circuits upstairs, they all have to take this course. I just can't agree with Hockey New Brunswick paying for this. It's just not right.

I was at an "A" tournament last weekend in NB and parents were intoxicated, swearing etc. at the start of the game. It makes it awkward for people just there to watch their kids.

Maybe they should hire someone to go around to the rinks and fine the parents for bad behavior .After three fines you drop your kid of at the door and pick them up when they are done.

Come on people, let's end this NANNY STATE. I have never heard of a more ridiculous thing in my life. I guess, unlike the rest of us, that HOCKEY NEW BRUNSWICK has a surplus of cash and a shortage of common sense. But they are in good company as there is no longer any common sense, only individuals with good sense. Do these adult parents not know how to behave properly in public? The next thing they will do is try to legislate this to law. In reality this type of things happen universally with growth in numbers, things become unruly or unmanageable. Bigger is not better, it is usually worse. Go back to smaller more manageable rinks and games. Enjoy the sport, try to enjoy your time with your children. If the sport is stressful then get away from it for your kids sake.
