LONDON - The Ministry of Defence says a British soldier has died after his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan.

The ministry says that the soldier was patrolling in the Nahr-e Saraj district in southern Helmand when the explosion struck the vehicle Tuesday. He died from his wounds the same day.

It said the soldier, who was not identified, was taking part in an operation against insurgents in the area.

The ministry says Wednesday his family has been informed.

The death was the 347th among British forces and civilian defence workers in Afghanistan since operations began there in 2001.

NATO confirmed that the death was the same one it announced late Tuesday.
