While nothing really beats a good scratch behind the ears, pets at the P.E.I. Humane Society have a lot more to wag their tails about thanks to one Island girl.
Seven-year-old Ivy Hutchinson recently donated $115 worth of food, treats, toys and other pet supplies to the society
after requesting the items for her birthday in place of gifts.
Hutchinson came up with the idea of donating the items after a friend did something similar at her birthday.
Her mother, Maureen Higgins, said she wasn't the least bit surprised that her daughter would want to follow through with the idea.
"It didn't really come as a surprise because I know how much she loves dogs," she said, adding Hutchinson has talked about starting her own hotel for dogs.
"She's very kind. It's natural to her."
However, Higgins was surprised by the amount of support shown by guests at the birthday party.
"I was surprised by the amount of supplies," she said. "I thought they might bring a treat here or there but people came with boxes."
Lisa Hashie, development co-ordinator with the P.E.I. Humane Society, said the society was thrilled with Hutchinson's decision to donate the items.
"There's so many things the canned food helps with," said Hashie. "Litter is one of our biggest expenses here at the shelter, so (the donations) will help there too."
She added the toys for the animals will also be useful.
"The dogs get quite bored in their kennels," she said. "This (the toys) helps with that."

You are a kind child, Ivy. This story brightened my day. I wish more people would donate items to the Humane Society. I try and visit 4 times a year or so with needed supplies.
