Geoff Moon never knew how realistic a video game could be.
That was until he tried the DUMB Car 2.0 simulator.
"It's actually very good for a simulation," Moon said of his experience in the car.
The simulator, part of the Insurance Bureau of Canada's Be Smart Be Safe campaign, is aimed at showing people how easy it is to lose control of a car when you become distracted by things like a ringing cellphone or tuning a radio.
"You treat it like a game," Moon said.
"You try to beat it but you can't."
Animals leap in front of the car, the driver is made to answer his or her phone, change songs on an iPod, find a location on a map and any number of other potentially distracting common driving mistakes.
"The way the simulator is, you're not expecting something to jump out in front of you, but it does happen," she said.
Which is what the simulator tries to address.
"It's all about awareness and education," said Atlantic tour manager Corinne MacLean. "Eight out of 10 collisions in Canada are a direct result of distracted driving."
She added the responses received from many people who try the simulator vary depending on the group.
"It's really positive," MacLean said.
"We have different reactions based on where we are, but it's always positive."
The simulator is just one aspect of the bureau's Atlantic Canada tour aimed at raising people's awareness about the underlying safety hazards behind distracted driving.
The tour also covers how to avoid common household injuries and how to prepare in the event of a natural disaster.
The bureau will be touring Atlantic Canada with stops in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland scheduled until the end of August.

It's too bad a game/simlulator like this one wasn't developed right here in PEI, using actual PEI roads and streets.
