A young toddler was pulled out of the backseat of a car involved in a two-vehicle, multiple injury accident this afternoon in Charlottetown.

The blond-haired little boy, who was buckled in his car seat, was crying but not believed to be seriously injured.

Paramedics took him out of the car and into an awaiting ambulance.

Charlottetown Police, Fire and Island EMS were at the scene of the crash that occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of the Kensington Road and Charlottetown bypass.

The toddler was in the backseat of a Saturn, which sustained extensive damage on the front, driver's side of the car. A second passenger, an adult man, was also in that vehicle.

The second vehicle, an older model Toyota Camry, sustained extensive damage to its front end. Two women, who were passengers inside the Toyota, were taken to hospital by a second awaiting ambulance.

Traffic was at a virtual standstill in the area with a massive backup of vehicles, especially for vehicles heading west along the bypass highway.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were on the scene for a couple of hours.

Ok Mackinley, for the last time, GET RID OF THIS RIDICULOUS INTERSECTION! This should be a right in, right out intersection, with through traffic on the By-Pass that never has to stop. Right now its a dangerous and extremely inefficient intersection. Its at the bottom of a hill in both directions, making hard to stop, and cars naturally accelerate through the intersection, because of the hill. This light changes for one car waiting at Kensington and stops 25 cars and 6 tractor tailors who have to break going 70km/hr or more, down a hill. Seriously! Cmon! The Politician or Provincial Engineer who decided this intersection was worthy of lights owes every Charlottetown driver a new set a breaks, and the unfortunate drivers in this article a new car. Luckily no one was killed. Hopefully the lights will be removed before somebody does get killed.

and again.... was a towing/recovery company not required onsite to help with this situation or were only .... police, firefighters and paramedics... necessary to recovery these damaged vehicles and free the roadway for safe passage?

I am really glad to know the two cars involved were a Toyota and a Saturn. Is this info really germane to the story.

    Hope all are well.

Without a doubt, one of the most deadly intersections on P.E.I.Vehicles run the red on a regular basis, heavy trucks travel at a speed that rivals the space shuttle on take off and to add this, some vehicles coming out of the minihome park cut across traffic to access Kensington Road,a maneuver completely illegal, yet I see people doing this all the time .Vehicles travelling south attempting to access the minihome
park sit in the through lane waiting to turn left, totally vulnerable to speeding traffic in both directions.Something has to be done to correct this deadly intersection.

I pray those involved in this accident are o.k.

Tower, so you are looking at these tragedies as free advertisement for your or some friend's towing company and you are upset that the company is not mentioned in the story. This is the first time I have heard of this. A new trend could be starting. Maybe the taxi company that took the victims home could be mentioned. Or maybe the doctor and his clinic could be written about or if it there is a fatality maybe the funeral home could be mentioned. The brand of bandages used...

I wonder if someone got tired of waiting for the red light from Kensington.... that's gotta be the longest light on PEI. Hope everyone is ok.

This is a strong reminder for parents of young children to be sure your car seat has been PROPERLY installed in you vehicle. 7 out of 10 seats are installed wrong...scary statistic. I strongly encourage parents of young children to research Extended Rear Facing, children are 5 times safer rear facing than they are forward facing (especially in frontal impact collisions). Turning your child forward facing should not be considered a 1yr milestone! The only reason a child NEEDS to be turned forward facing is that they have outgrown by either height or weight, their convertible car seat (a seat which can be used forward or rear facing). Convertible car seats on the market today can be rear faced for between 30 & 45lbs (depending on the make & model of the seat). The same reasons apply for switching a child from a harnessed seat to a booster seat. Children are much safer if they remain harnessed until they are old enough & mature enough to sit properly in a booster seat EVERY single time they're in the vehicle (which actually typically about 6yrs old...not 4yrs - 4 is the bare minimum).
Once you seat has been properly installed, please be sure to use the harness properly!! Do your research...the harness needs to be snug, chest clip at the chest - not their belly.
    Keep your babies safe!!
