TIGNISH - Four new projects in western Prince Edward Island will share in a pot of more than $895,000.
Premier Robert Ghiz and Rural Development Minister Neil LeClair held an early morning tour of Prince County on Wednesday, dropping off cash in Tignish, O'Leary and Linkletter.
Ghiz says the money comes from the Island Community Fund. He said he was still in the opposition benches when he recognized the need for funding for small projects, particularly in rural areas of the province.
"When I first came into government I realized that a lot of our smaller communities do not have the same resources that the Summersides and Charlottetowns do to be able to access different funds," Ghiz told The Guardian.
"I wanted to make a fund that would help out our rural communities in this province, to help them with their community centres, with their rinks, with different projects that were perhaps a little bit smaller and didn't fit into the mega-million-dollar projects and that's exactly what this is doing."
Renovations will be completed at the Tignish Parish Centre in Tignish, which has been a centre for cultural events, community activities and social functions. Total cost of the project is $108,795.
Construction crews continued to install wallboards while the P.E.I. premier toured the centre early Wednesday morning.
Renovations are being carried out both inside and outside and the kitchen is being remodeled.
Ghiz then made a stop at the Tignish Health Co-op.
The Tignish Health Co-op is a community-owned health centre. It houses physician's offices, a dental clinic and a pharmacy.
The board of directors will complete an addition to its facilities that will house a range of health and health-related services. The total cost of the project is $203,585.
The work will be completed in May.
In O'Leary, the Community Centre will be upgraded through improvements to the parking lot and a new barrier-free access with a total cost of $120,000. The centre houses the local fire department, civic offices, library, daycare and public meeting rooms.
The Community of Linkletter will construct a new community centre at a total cost of $462,408.
Linkletter is located just west of Summerside.
"The new Rural Action Plan developed by the provincial government sets out a roadmap and 40 specific actions now underway or being finalized," said Ghiz.
"The development of rural communities is a major priority of the provincial government and I look forward to continuing to work with rural Islanders to promote jobs and growth."

My point wasnt to suggest as much as that ,as to say you see the same story run for one or two and sometimes three days, and each time I see comments wiped out and deleted daily, like someone is handpicking what comments are put out there. They will run they exact same storey and erase all comments and start with a clean slate. Why do they do this is all I wonder. As you see when you read the other posts,I'm not the only one who notice's this.

Community Development Initiative Benefits Rural PEI
The Province of Prince Edward Island is changing its approach to community development by implementing an initiative that will help rural areas coordinate community development at the local level. As part of A New Partnership with Island Communities, a Community Development Fund was established and six Community Development Officers hired to assist rural citizens in determining and implementing the most effective measures for strengthening their communities.
At the very heart of our province, communities play a vital role in economic development, stated Premier Binns. Through this initiative, government will be in a better position to partner with communities in the development process, and the responsibility within government will be broadened to involve more departments. The Premier added that this initiative follows through on the government's pledge in the 1999 Budget Address to create a Community Development Fund to help rural PEI.
The focus of this community/government partnership will be to capitalize on the ideas and strengths within each individual community by helping citizens to identify the improvements that will bring long-term sustainability to the area. After citizens come to a consensus on what improvements need to be made, all provincial government departments will play a role in bringing about the changes needed to enhance and improve the economies of rural communities. -

mister - I agree with you whole heartedly. I have had many posts never make it on here when they were too blatantly critical of the Premier or a Minister.
Or, if they were critical of the slant put on an article by a particular reporter.
I will be surprised if this makes it to print too. -

that didn't take long..... I don't remember the Cons doing anything for rural PEI. so when the PC's were in power and they done all the under handed things where were all you cry babies? there were many under the table deals going on. but as longs as the PC party was showing patronage then who cared, (which cost the province millions). so to all you PC supports I think you need to quiet down, because when & if the PC party is back in power i hope you are this vocal of their mistakes.

giving out money before your paid vacation to the biggest show on earth in vancouver. How about doing what the premier of nb is doing and staying in his province taking care of matters at hand and not partying it up especially since you just took a vacation.

'I thought a comment section was for EVERYONES opinion, not just the ones who praise the Gov'
What a bizarre comment. You actually saying there are no comments here that condemn the government?
Find the older version of the story, you'll find the original comments that came along with it. -

So Ghiz made a trip to Rural PEI after he returned from Mexico and before he left for Vancover...how nice.
He hasn't shown any interest in Rural PEI up to now..nice to see him actually leave the boundaries of Charlottetown once during his first and last term as Premier. -

Linkletter... rural PEI?
Lets face it, this rural action plan is no more than a few make work projects that will contribute little to nothing to the development of rural PEI.
And this is coming from a Liberal... -

Some Liebrals can't admit that the current government makes 1930's Chicago look like paragons of virtue.
I guess islanders are such sheep they won't do anything if no one is getting killed....yet. -

Iam glad to see the plan of action by the Ghiz government is on the mark. There has been much negative talk about the lack of rural development , from so many people. The best of plans by any organization, has to be well planned before the are put into action. I think that we will see more developement in rural PEI that ever before. I would say to those who will say not enough ,as one politician said Just watch me . So keep up the good work Robert.

I agree with Mister.
If the story is re-run the previous comments should not be omitted! To do so presents a skewed view on the issue by changing the numbers on positive and negative comments! -

Robert on one hand you need to be thanked for the support to these community based groups.....much needed and much apreciated. .......on the other hand you need to be questioned regarding rural support of local businesses. I suspect a few community based local internet providers are very disappointed on how you have shoved them aside in support of the larger corporate multinational. I hope they (Bell subsiduary) have thanked you and the tax payers of PEI publically for the $8.2 + $1.0 = $9.2 million contribution to their asset base......in other words the equipment necessary to roll out the rural coverage......it has been recently stated by one of your own team that this did in deed happen......so there was a contract complete with a deliverable and a reward $$$$$$$$$$ tell the correct story...it is time!!!!!
It can be stated if you don't soon then soon it will be stated....always better to be the first out with the message....positive or negative.
Time........ -

There were several comments on here earlier, where have they gone?.Why does the guardian see fit to run the same stories daily, but deletes the comments every time they rerun the storey.I think it may have something to do with whose side the posters are taking. But I thought a comment section was for EVERYONES opinion, not just the ones who praise the Gov.This comment section is as biased as it gets, the moderators DEFINATLY are not unbiased as they should be.This site does not endorse free speech.I bet this comment wont make it by the moderators, and if it did,it woulkd dissapear shortly after, like everybody elses.

The Liberal Government will leave this Province so far in debt that noone will be able to live in this Province.
The Alberta government is starting to discuss the amount of transfer payments they make to the central government.
This certainly will force a cut back on transfers to this Province and if that happens we are going to go broke if the Government continues to spend and waste money.
We need ideas to get us away from the Federal Gov`t handouts and become self sufficient. I think all parties of guilty of doing the same old thing.
It is evident that this Government does have a clue. For example they close schools in the rural areas ,build more class rooms in urban areas, move a Liquor that had a number of years left on the lease . Just seems that they are not consistent in managing our money. -

I can't understand why there can't be a Tory out there that could write a blog that would not be so negative and personal, when ever there is progress in this Province. I just don't get it. I have a song that goes to the tune of the pants on the ground tune from the Idol show it goes like this RANT AND RAVE ,RANT AND RAVE , LOOKING LIKE A FOOL WHEN I RANT AND RAVE.I do hope all you Torys like it, I wrote just for you!
