This really boggles my mind. 289 000 dollars to revamp liquor headquarters, yet no money for health and education! Just when I thought this government couldn't surprise us by thier actions anymore, along comes this headline. Absolutely deplorable!! Definately will go down as the most corrupt, underhanded government in PEI History. Hope you're proud of this distinction!

Why no divest taxpayers of this cost and offer beer in corner stores and hard liquor or wine at approved private store outlets like in PEI.
What an outdated bastion of control on booze ! -

Ahh that smirk says it all.
That is the High ranking Liberal I got hundreds of thousands of dollars for me, my wife, and my sister from PNP look.
Brooke: Who approved my units? Ahhhh never you mind that, it doesn't interest you common folk. Why did I get to apply for units when no one else could? Well because I ran the PNP that is why! Now I get to hire wine and beer experts like Rob Vessey's former assistant! -

You want to make it more professional? Get the politics out. Open up the market. We have a closed system, pay outrageous prices, have little choice, and subsidize closed minds and buddies of the government of the day. Pee-uew.

Just remember the tax payers of Pei own the Liquor Control Commission not the ghiz government or some new CEO that got his job thew patronage. So please stop wasting our money on this crap 25000 to move a store that's in a perfectly good spot and could be renovated there, then hiring all these new people to talk islanders into buying more booze (as if 90m wasn't enough) shouldn't they know that booze sells its self specially on Pei. Leave the liquor commission alone its obviously doing well, try fixing the health care system or something like that how about.

This is ridiculous. Money for the likes of this unnecessary work and we have farmers who are being forced off their land because they are not paid for the work they do. Yet, the government seems intent to fiddle around while Rome burns . What will happen when we have no farmers left in PEI and crop disasters in other parts of the world? Just think about it, Ghiz, and get your priorities straight.

- Wasteful Spending
- - June 21st, 2010 at 20:20:46
This is totally unneeded! To Renovate all staff offices as well at the highest level with the present deficit is unnecessary and unneeded!
$289 thousand to renovate half of this building and $695, Plus Plus for the Ray Murphy site to sell Liquour!!!!!
Meantime Islanders are still waiting for Rotor Cup Surgeries, Hosp. Beds, Kidney Dialysis and Critical Equipment in Health Care Services and 60% or more can't afford to heat their homes!
I just don't understand how such unnesecessary spending can continue or how nobody seemingly has any say or control! -

I dunno Mike - maybe the feds are putting money into it as part of the recovery? If so then you can get your picture taken with Gail and claim some credit. And the doorknob - that Easter fella can wave protest signs out front.

gussy denver, you seem to be a guy who might know about these renovations, stimulus projects, tradespeople, etc. Maybe you know some of the insider stuff as you appear to be one of the few on this board standing up for the Brookster and the Ghiz hoods.
Anyhow here is my question. There is a bit of a spin in the story about some of these renovations being done before the Brookster took over the booze boss role from whomever had the job before him. When did these take place?
It's fairly light spin because it was well known that Brookie was on his way to the LCC since early in the Ghiz regime. Within a few weeks back in 2007 it was completely clear to anybody that had sense that he was totally unfit to be a deputy minister, and the booze boss role was in the sights for this special guy in the Fifth Floor vision of the world many months before he actually landed there.
Can you enlighten us on any of this, gussy denver? -

This picture pretty well settles it for me. Kick the bums out in 2011. I am a senior citizen and have never been much for getting upset over politics but, this government of Robert Ghiz's and the people he brought into big paying jobs, has me very disappointed and upset. I remember all the enthusiasm of the election night. well that is long gone in in 2011 they'll be kicked out of power so far they'll be generations doing anything. And I say good riddance to these thieves!

Next thing the new Liquor headquarters will have one of those touchless washrooms like the Preimer's Office.....The one where the door alone costs over TEN THOUSAND dollars.
-
- Umm Job Creation! HA
- - June 21st, 2010 at 20:10:31
There's an interesting spin - MacMillan and Job Creation! ummmm
Well let's see given the reported facts:
$289,000 will renovate about half of the building.
$300,000 fixing up their offices
The province is paying $25,000 to break its existing lease with Ray Murphy, $695,000 to renovate the new space next to Sobeys as well as pay annual rent of more than $70,000.
I have to wonder where they'll find the $'s to pay these trades people? When you create jobs on Government Projects who do you think pays the workers?
$1,380,000. not including worker's wages for liquor stores! -
- They should

Fire Brooke...I still want to see a full scale RCMP investigation into PNP-instead of Brooke holding the biggest POSH job on PEI he should be in an 8x6 cell in Dorchester...same on you mr.ghiz
-

- - June 21st, 2010 at 20:09:12
The only reason they broke the lease is Mr. Ray Murphy is a Conservative! The building was fine and he stated that he would build on if needed as there was plenty of space behind the building for renovations.
Just a waste of money
The smirk from Mr.MacMillan tells the whole story -

$300k for office renovations? That's almost six units. Good thing we're paying for this and those units are staying in Brooke's pocket.
I guess I'd have a stupid grin like that too if I could line my pockets, get away with it and then get promoted. -

Who needs all these fancy expensive renovations? People go to the liquor store to buy liquor period. If you sold liquor a warehouse basement with unpainted walls, and rickey wooden shelves - people would still come and buy it. Why waste taxpapers money on the fancy surroundings that just aren't needed to sell liquor? Put our taxpayers money to better use - debt reduction.

Oh great, another feature story with Brooke MacMillan!
Brooke appears to be out of control. One would have thought his apologia in the recent Letters to Editor would have put an end to his public exposure for a while. But no there he is again in today's Guardian --- picture and all.
Brooke MacMillan is proving to be an albratross for Robert Ghiz's and the Liberal Party. He is costing the Party votes and that is likely to translate into lost seats and possibly the government in the next election.
It is time Brooke did the right thing for the Premier and Liberal Party. Resign! -

A leader must learn to respect his enemies, and even more importantly to hold his friends at a distance from the affairs of his government and his party. For the good of the people. The story of Brooke is the failure of the leadership of Robert Ghiz. This story and photo will be featured in the archives in explaining the Liberal defeat in the election of fall 2011. A picture is worth a thousand words!

Can this clown not stay out of the paper, he is an embarrassment to the commission, an embarrassment to Liberals, an embarrassment to all public servants and an embarrassment to all islanders. the only person on PEI who is not embarrassed by his association with this clown is Robert Ghiz.
-
- Typical island tripe
- - June 21st, 2010 at 19:56:36
sometimes i think Islanders only vote for people who they think will give them a good target to gripe at.
They claim that heir party was ordained by God himself, the other party let by Satan's worst minions, everyone else escaped mental patients, and somehow they can still convince themselves that they are the only person in the world who is objective.
This province should be quarantined off as a mental assylum. -
- WhataWaste
- - June 21st, 2010 at 19:56:36
With good fellows like this running the show little wonder the average Islander is heading to alberta or the poor house. What an incredible EGO and WASTE of money. Please Minister Vessey step in and stop this mad man and his schemes and dreams. We are running a provincial debt close to 100 million this year alone. Fire Brooke MacMillan!!!! He talks about professionalism. Having lots of money does not make you 'professional'. A lot of criminal types have lot's of money. And boy-o-boy we know how professional they are!!!!
-
- What a Joke
- - June 21st, 2010 at 19:51:40
First we pay 25,000 dollar to break a lease we didn't need to break. Then we cough up 695, 000 to renovate the new space we didn't need and still have to pay 70,000 a year to be there. Do any of you renters out there put new windows, doors, floors, a/c in your rental property or is that the responsiblity of your landlord?
This government is RETARDED so say the least. Now they want to spend 289,000 so Brooke MacMillan has a new sofa to sit on and pretty windows to look out of. Is this really what we elected our MLA's to do? I would be so embarassed if I were any of them. You are the laughing stoke of PEI, next to Ghiz the Wiz of course...and sad part is, you don't even know it. UNBELIEVEABLE. -

just think if the Commission only dealt withregulations it would be possible to :
1. eliminate all warehousing costs
2. eliminate all retail operations.
3. eliminate wine tasters
Think of the savings to taxpayers.
Think of the savings for the consumers.
JUST THINK! -

- - June 21st, 2010 at 19:48:55
Brooke has shown that he is the consummate professional as he has not lowered standards and put himself in the gutter like what I see on this board.
If more Islanders could see that these renovations are putting tradespeople to work thus stimulating the economy, you are VERY short sighted and not prone to basic economic structure.
The ignorance of islanders knows no end. -

- - June 21st, 2010 at 19:48:38
Its funny to see that Mr. MacMillan has been in the media several times in the last year mean while you never heard about the old CEO being in the media and he was in power for like 20 years!!!
1. the startford liquor store move was a complete waste of TAX PAYERS money $695,000!! they could of build on to the current building or move to TRA without breaking a lease... Where is parkdale doris to represent her community?!?!?!
2. renovate the head quarters... $289,000
3. paying a guy that makes 110,000 to waste tax payers money.... priceless.... -

- - June 21st, 2010 at 19:41:34
It looks to me like no one, not Islanders, or their politicians are seeing things objectively anymore. Islanders spit fire the minute they read about the gov spending any money, the media helping them by using suggestive text. The government seems to have its priorities mixed up and are disconnected from what Islanders want and need.
Personally I feel sorry for MacMillan. Sure he may have gotten a slice of PNP pie, but by all means, his piece wasn't as big as others. He was the gov scapegoat, took the fall, put into a job as a thank you and now anything he does is condemned.
But let's not forget the Conservatives also took PNP, also blew money to suit their needs when in power, paid their party faithful, lined pockets of friends and family members.
What Islanders need to realize is all your complaining and whining is for nothing until you take ACTION.
Don't want to join the newly formed Island Party? Then have your MLA removed by signing a petition and getting rid of the corruption instead of waiting for an election!

You might have been able to employ 3 new doctors with that money, buy needed equipment for the hospital, retrain many who are out of work, improve a library, set-up a small scale angel fund, or a host of many other more important needs. This governments priorities are all wrong.

why does the government allow this guy to say anything to the press or allow him to have his picture in the paper?? don,t they realise he has no credibility with anyone?? are they trying to irratate the voting pyblic or just plain commit suicide??

- - June 21st, 2010 at 19:38:28
Do you think Brooke gets it?
Do you think he ever will?
I thought his job was to make money for the government/taxpayers. Not very hard with a full-fledged monopoly.
His view seems to be blue-sky projects no one wants (Cavendish) and now much more comfortable surroundings for Brooke.
I suspect the new minister will warn him off once more from the more outrageous renos. How about a ticket straight out the door? -

COME ON. The man shouldn't still have a job and there he is smilin' away more money when we are looking for at least 100,000,000 in a budget deficit.
He changed the rules he and his wife benefitted and he got the top patronage plum on the island. COME ON!!!!!!! -

- - June 21st, 2010 at 19:37:56
What a total squandering of taxpayers' money. We can't afford expensive but life saving drugs to treat cancer and other serious diseases but we can fritter away money on renovating and relocating liquor stores. Absolutely disgraceful.
