Because of the nature of their profession, Island EMS paramedics see a lot of nasty things and are usually in contact with Islanders when they are in distress.
So when an opportunity comes along to help people in another way, paramedics across the Island jumped at the chance.
For the fourth year, they parked an ambulance at malls in Charlottetown and Summerside and filled it with toys and food they will then give to the Salvation Army in Charlottetown and Summerside to distribute to the less fortunate this Christmas.
"This is a lot nicer than the work we usually do," said paramedic Michael MacKenzie. "It's nice that we can fulfil somebody's Christmas because each year there are a lot of needy families out there and we see it first-hand so it is nice to know we can actually give back to the community and back to the people who are in need."
As he spoke, shoppers kept coming up to the ambulance and dropping off toys and food.
This is the fourth year for this event and MacKenzie said they collect more donations every year.
