Stratford Winter Carnival begins Thursday

Stratford's annual winter carnival gets underway Thursday with a finger play, music and rhyme event for toddlers.

The play, which begins at 10 a.m., will feature a winter theme suitable for infants and preschoolers. All toddlers must be accompanied by an adult.

The winter carnival runs through Sunday and includes a number of activities for all ages.

There will be card play for seniors Thursday night at the Cotton Centre at 7:30 p.m.

Friday's events include a youth dance for those in grades 7-9 in the town centre gym at 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 advance and $8 at the door. The town indicates a dress code will be in effect, there will be security on site and the event will be chem-free. Canteen service will be provided.

There will also be crokinole games at the Cotton Centre at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday's calendar of events begins with a pancake breakfast at town hall at 7:30 a.m., followed by the official opening in the same gym at 9 a.m.

At 1 p.m., the Town of Stratford is hosting a free multicultural event it is calling Tapestry: A Celebration of Island Life. There will be food, music, dance, storytelling, dress, crafts and displays from 10 different countries. People will also be able to sample food from around the world, such as baklava, falafel, lumpia and samosas.

For those with a bit of a competitive spirit, there will also be a Scrabble tournament at 1 p.m. in the public library. Highest points will be awarded for the day and there will be winners in both the children's and adult categories. Prizes will be awarded.

At 1:30 p.m., there will be a basketball free-throw contest at Glen Stewart school, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Open to all ages, there will be prizes awarded.

There's also a free family skate at the Pownal Sports Centre from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

For those who prefer to stay outside, the town is hosting a free snowshoeing event at Cotton Park from 2-4 p.m. Snowshoes will be provided by Go P.E.I.

Saturday's list of fun concludes with some free adult trivia at town hall at 7:30 p.m. People are asked to register with Glen Beaton at 569-2961 or with the recreation department at 569-2535. Maximum six players per team.

Sunday's activities begin with an adult mixed volleyball tournament at town hall at 11 a.m. Teams will consist of six to eight players but there must be at least two females on the court at all times.

A sleigh ride and petting pen follows from 2-4 p.m. Great Northern Adventures is hosting the free event at 924 Fort Augustus Road in Mount Herbert. Hot chocolate will be served.

There will be a family fun hour at the town hall from 2:30-3:30 p.m. for parents and children up to seven years of age.

The 2013 winter carnival wraps up with an adult badminton tournament at town hall at 4 p.m. Donations of $10 or more will be accepted with proceeds going to the Autism Society of P.E.I.
