POWNAL - Recognition for a Prince Edward Island tulip farm has crossed the Dominion of Canada to reach the Pacific shore.
A photo, entitled Tulip Farm In Bloom - P.E.I., taken by a freelance photographer at Vanco Farms in Pownal several years ago, now adorns the front of a 2010 calendar issued by the British Columbia Automobile Association.
The honour is a thrill for Willem VanNieuwenhuyzen, who operates the tulip portion of the family farm in Pownal.
"I hadn't seen the calendar until today," he said.
"It's a nice picture."
Georgina Mulligan of Charlottetown said she is a big fan of the photo and voted online in support of the photo after reading about the story in The Guardian in early August.
Mulligan contacted the BCAA and had her calendar shipped to Charlottetown.
"It's a beautiful photograph," said Mulligan.
She says the picture should help attract interest among British Columbians to come to P.E.I. for holidays.
When Les Dickason from Nanaimo, B.C., visited P.E.I., he photographed some picturesque scenery of the Island.
Earlier this year the BCAA held a contest for travel photos for its 2010 calendar and Dickason submitted one of his P.E.I. shots at Vanco Farm.
His photo was selected from hundreds of entries.
Then the calendar contest entered a second phase in August as viewers on the BCAA website could vote for their favourite photo from among the 13 finalists. The winner would appear as the cover photo.
P.E.I. Tourism Minister Valerie Docherty got involved, as she encouraged Islanders to vote for Dickason's photograph to assist in his campaign to have his photograph on the cover.
The calendar is now available from the BCAA. Visit www.bcaa.com; call toll-free 1-800-564-6222, or write: BCAA Head Office, 4567 Canada Way, Burnaby, B.C., V5G 4T1.

I remember when Vanco had the fields of tulips...they were absolutely stunning! As I drove to and from work in Charlottetown each day, it made me smile every time I passed. Congratulations!

Dominion of Canada expired in April 1982 when the constitution was repatriated.

The country was renamed simply CANADA.
