One of P.E.I.'s most respected educators has been honoured by the Rotary Club of Charlottetown with the prestigious George Tweedy Award.
Tom Wilkinson was presented with the award during the recent Rotary Premier's Dinner at the Delta Prince Edward.
The George Tweedy Award is presented annually to an Island Rotarian who has made an outstanding contribution to his community.
Wilkinson, who was kept in the dark about the award, spent more than 30 years as a teacher and school administrator at the elementary, junior and senior high school levels.
His career as an educator culminated with his appointment as principal at one of P.E.I.'s largest high schools, Colonel Gray Senior High.
Wilkinson is devoted to his family, his church, his community and to Rotary.
He has been active in his church and the Diocese of Charlottetown on several levels, providing leadership in such areas as the parish pastoral associates program and the diocesan pastoral Initiatives committee, as well as serving as director of pastoral planning and acting as cantor for Holy Redeemer parish.
He also serves as the regional minister of the Secular Franciscan Order, providing leadership and regional support to 17 fraternities of the order located throughout Atlantic Canada and Ontario.
Wilkinson's commitment to Rotary extends back more than 30 years.
He was a charter member and charter president of the Rotary Club of Charlottetown Royalty in 1987.
He has served Rotary in many capacities since then at the club, district and zone levels, including a term as district governor for Rotary District 7820 in 2001-2002.
He has served as a training officer for club president- and secretary-elects, as a group study exchange leader, as a membership chair, a finance and strategic planning chair, a presenter, a membership co-ordinator and sessional leader.
Wilkinson has been the recipient of two Rotary International directors awards, several district governor citations and the Rotary Foundation District Service Award.
