Host City Cinema leads off with evening dedicated entirely to showcasing, celebrating Island's talented filmmakers

The first annual Charlottetown Film Festival will launch on Friday Oct. 16 at City Cinema with an evening dedicated entirely to showcasing and celebrating the Island's talented filmmakers and their works.

At the 7 p.m. screening, short films are the focus. Mille Clarkes' "Islands" and Jenna McMillan's "Not My Brother" will bookend a number of shorts, trailers and teasers by Prince Edward Islands most promising screen artists including Adam Perry, Justin O'Hanley and Renee Laprise.

Helaina Lalande's animated short "The Vagabond" will kickoff the 9 p.m. screening of P.E.I.'s first feature film, the comic-geek comedy, "Kooperman" produced by Charlottetown's Periscope Pictures. Director Harmony Wagner and producer Jason Rogerson will field a Q + A session after the show.

Running from Oct 16 to 18, the Charlottetown Film Festival describes its debut as a Festival of Firsts, bringing first features from directors from all four Atlantic provinces for Island film buffs and filmmakers to enjoy.

"There is a wealth of talent here in this region ready, willing and able to tell our stories to us and for us," says Cheryl Wagner, the festival's executive director.

"We are saving you a seat so you can discover these rising stars first."

Rounding out the festival are remarkable documentaries like "The Search for Evangeline" -Canada's first feature film, a quirky Icelandic first feature Of Horses and Men, Big Pete Murphy's latest "The Murder Ballad Variations" plus an impressive variety of short works from all of Atlantic Canada. Tickets are $10 at the door.
