Charlottetown actress April Cook never imagined she’d actually get to hold one of the most prized possessions in the entertainment industry.
However, it became reality after another one of her dreams came true this year.
Cook has always dreamed of going to the Ellen DeGeneres Show so she applied for tickets back in January. Not only was she lucky enough to score two tickets, but she got front-row seats at Ellen’s post-Oscar-hosting show that featured actress Cate Blanchett who had won an Academy Award the night before for best actress.
Cook attended the show with her boyfriend’s brother’s wife, Megan Lesoway. As it turned out, Blanchett not only brought her Oscar trophy with her, she let some members of the audience hold it, including Cook.
“It was pretty cool because, obviously, in my lifetime I never thought I would get to hold an Oscar,’’ Cook said in an interview from Edmonton where she resides now. “Even though it wasn’t mine I still got to borrow it for a second.’’
On top of that, the cameras caught her moment with Oscar, broadcasting the image around the world.
“It was pretty funny. My Facebook exploded,’’ she laughs. “Everyone has PVRs (personal video recorders) now, so they were pausing it and taking pictures.’’
Cook has performed in a variety of productions at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. She played Maria in The Sound of Music, Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz and had parts in Charlottetown Festival musicals like British Invasion 2 and Hairspray. She will also be performing shortly in Hairspray in Edmonton.
As for her impressions of Oscar, he’s heavy (each one weighs 8.5 pounds).
“It’s like this prized possession. They’re pretty heavy.’’
From what Cook could spot, Blanchett’s Oscar was engraved simply “Best Actress Cate Blanchett, 2014”.
While it may not seem like a big deal to a lot of people, for someone who makes her living on stage it was pretty special.
“For me, holding an Oscar is a pretty big deal.’’
