Georgetown concert part of Music PEI Week
Georgetown – Paper Lions is this year’s winner of the SOCAN songwriter of the year award for the song My Friend, from the album of the same name.
The multiple-award-winning Canadian indiepop rock band received the award during the annual songwriters concert Wednesday, part of Music PEI Week, at Kings Playhouse.
The Island band, known for its exciting live shows, was represented by frontman John MacPhee who accepted the award.
The award event and concert featured special guest host Jim Cuddy from Blue Rodeo.
Other award winners included Meaghan Blanchard for female solo recording of the year for her recent recording She’s Gonna Fly.
Her songs range from thought-provoking ballads to fun music that any audience can sing along to, said her citation.
Dennis Ellsworth took home two awards Wed., including male solo recording of the year and roots contemporary recording of the year for his album Hazy Sunshine.
Ellsworth is a prolific singer-songwriter with recent tours of the UK, said his citation.
“Dennis is considered one of Atlantic Canada’s most exciting up and coming songwriters,” said organizers.
The fifth award handed out Wednesday night at the songwriters concert in Georgetown was the rooted to the Island award. The winner this year is Daniel Ledwell, an Island musician, producer, painter, and graphic designer who has worked with some national and international artists.
Performances at the concert came from the winners and this year's nominees for SOCAN songwriter of the year, including Jordan Cameron, Ashley Condon, along with previous winner Catherine MacLellan.
Events still to come for Credit Union Music PEI Week 2014 include the Heavyweights Show at Hunter’s Ale House on Thur., Jan. 30.
Friday sees 13 venues across PEI from Montague to Alberton taking part in Friday Night Live presenting 30 Island artists.
Saturday afternoon from 2-4 p.m. the Confederation Court Music in the Malls presented by ECMA will be a free event with music from The Music Man Mike Pendergast, Dylan Menzie and Richard Wood with Gordon Belsher.
The week comes to a close with the Music PEI Awards Gala Presented by Ticketpro Saturday night at the PEI Convention Centre.
