A 16-year-old Charlottetown youth whose actions on Facebook created a
state of alarm at Charlottetown Rural High School this fall pleaded guilty Monday in provincial youth court to making a threat on Facebook against the school.
The youth, whose identity is protected by the Youth Criminal Justice Act, admitted to the court that he set up a fake account on the popular social networking site and used the account to send a message to two other students warning that the school was to be the scene of a shooting.
He said he sent the message to see if he could "get a rise" out of the two students in question.
He did not realize the message would be forwarded to others. City Police dispatched officers to the school to monitor the situation. They remained on site for several hours.
Some parents kept their children at home.
Police tracked down the youth through his IP address.
The Eastern School District has already disciplined the youth.
He will be back in court Feb. 8 for sentence.

I wonder how Defend Your Rights would fee about Freedom of Speech if this young lad had put a notice on Face Book that there was going to be a shooting on his street tomorrow morning and all should hide!!!
Would he condone that too? And would he be telling what he calls the stupid sheeple (tax paying citizens also with rights) to Defend the young lad's right of Freedom os Speech? What Next? -

Beg Your Pardon?
Threats are Not Free Speech they're Threats! And I hope this case will make that point with our young People !
(He said he sent the message to see if he could get a rise out of the two students in question.
He did not realize the message would be forwarded to others.)
Maybe now he'll realize telling friends there's going to be a shooting at their school and to hide isn't something to instill a rise it's something to instill pandemonium and fear! And maybe he'll also learn that what you put on the internet can be seen by the World and can be used by anyone and they can do what ever they wish with it! -

Free speech does not include making threats in person, in a letter, on the phone, on the Internet, or in any other forum. Yelling FIRE ! in a crowded theater - when there is no fire - is not recognized as free speech. There is an endless list of examples.

Back in the day when kids got in trouble with the law it was printed in paper as the son of so and so. Maybe if the parents names were printed they would do a better job at teach kids right from wrong. I think this boy needs help of some sort.

These troubling stats could fill a book. Why do you think law enforcement took the measures they did at Charlottetown Rural. It can happen folks, this is not something to be taken lightly, these are the times we live in.Parents, know what your children are doing, what they're into...communication. -

Defend your rights....Don't be too hard on this poor young man. He is only following Mr Trudeau's charter of rights and freedoms. There is no mention of responsibilities. My personal feeling...your rights should diminish proportionally to the offense one commits against another person who also has rights. In our system, only the offender, has rights.

Did you ever notice that the first people to scream FREE SPEECH are always the people who have no idea what it really means and entails?

What a stupid kid, didn't think his message would be forwarded. It's almost the first thing anyone does with an email that they think is interesting to share, especially a threat.

Defend your RIGHTs: There's a difference between free speech and making threats.
