CORNWALL - Construction of a new $2.3-million kindergarten addition at Westwood Primary School is now well underway, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Gerard Greenan.
"Construction of the new kindergarten wing is coming along nicely," said Greenan. "When it is finished, Cornwall area students and teachers will have access to a contemporary new facility that is very conducive to early learning."
The 15,000-square-foot addition includes 11 kindergarten classrooms, two Grade 1 classrooms, a Reading Recovery centre, teacher planning rooms, offices, washrooms and a fenced courtyard playground.
There are approximately 410 students in Grades 1, 2 and 3 now attending Westwood.
Enrolment is expected to increase to 535 students when kindergarten begins in September 2010.
The school was built in 1991 to accommodate 450 students.
The new addition was designed by N46 Architecture Inc. The general contractor is Williams Murphy and Macleod (1993) Ltd.

Good for Cornwall. Too bad the people of Sherwood and Parkdale haven't clued in to the fact that schools around PEI are adding space for the kindergarten kids but Sherwood and Parkdale aren't! Why you ask because your gov't is going to split the schools up and send K to grade 3 to one school and grades 4 to 6 to the other. Why do you think the Trustees kept Parkdale school open last year!
