Abby Redmond, 5, donates her hair to help cancer patients

Topics :
Charlottetown

With blond hair that reaches past her waist, five-year-old Abby Redmond has never had a haircut in her life.
But that all changed Monday when she had about 12 inches chopped off at Allison's Hair Design in Charlottetown.
Redmond's gold locks are being donated to Locks of Love to be made into hairpieces and wigs for financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term hair loss as a result of medical treatment for illnesses such as cancer.
The special haircut has been talked about since Redmond was about three years old and was inspired by two of her grandparents who passed away from cancer. Redmond, who is a little shy, said she is donating her hair because of her "Grampy (Bill) Arthur" and grandmother Margaret Redmond.
"(I'm) giving it to Locks of Love for some little girl or boy who has cancer," Redmond said.
Redmond's mother, Kim, said her daughter never knew her grandparents that died but she understands what happened to them and her hair is going to help children who are suffering from the same disease.
"She has pictures of her grandparents. We told her Nanny and Grampy will be smiling down from heaven knowing she is helping someone," said mom.
She has been excited about the haircut for a while and Monday was the day, Kim said.
"She got up early jumping up and down and said, 'Today's the day I get my haircut'."
Monday was chosen for the day of her first haircut for one simple reason, Kim said.
"We always said when (her hair) gets past her bum we'll get it cut."
With her locks of hair in her hands, Redmond described how it felt.
"It feels soft," she said.

It's nice to see something like this in the newspaper for a change! It's also nice to see parents teaching their children empathy, and to be loving and caring towards other people, especially at such a young age!
And thanks Locks from PEI I had mine done a while ago, and have been looking for the right place to send it, thanks for the website!

I hope this is not too late. I would encourage you to not donate to locks of love as they have been known to sell hair to offset costs. Check this out.

There are other organizations which you can donate to and they are listed on the canadian cancer society website. Pantene has a great program.

I have had the pleasure of meeting little Abby as she is 'god-cousin' of my granddaughter. She truly is an amazing child...so mature and caring. Her parents are also amazing for helping her to learn what is important in life. Thank you little Abby for being such a caring little girl. Giving to the world in your own little way has made a difference in the life of someone else.
