SOURIS - There was more than one birthday to celebrate here Thursday.
It was Canada Day, but the celebration was also to mark the 100th birthday of the town of Souris.
The community is recognizing its centennial at a number of events throughout the year but Mayor David MacDonald said the big one comes in November.
Families filled the CN Park on Pond Street and regaled the birthday of the nation with flags, music, food and friendship.
"It's a great day for everyone and I want to thank the people in the yellow shirts because if we didn't have them we wouldn't have this," said MacDonald, referring to the host of town volunteers who put the celebration together.
Constable Earl Woods of the RCMP was decked out in his red serge for the official portion of the day but soon changed into something less formal to participate as a victim in the dunk tank.
The Souris Lions Club dished out burgers, hot dogs and mussels for the growing crowds who gathered for the games and music on stage.
"It's a very special year with our centennial," said local MLA Allan Campbell, who also delivered a special welcome to a group of visitors from Ontario, who were just across the street and helping the local Habitat for Humanity group build the first Habitat house in Souris.
