Al Douglas, director of branding, P.E.I Brewing Company in Charlottetown, is getting ready for the first Art Battle of the season. The popular competition returns March 26 at 7 p.m. at the P.E.I Brewing Company in Charlottetown.
It gets really exciting once you get rid of the stress of being on stage in front of hundreds of people.
Jason Johnston has been to his fair share of art battles in his lifetime.
When the 38-year-old artist first began competing, he was more concerned with the social aspects of the event and about trying to build his brand.
Since then, Art Battle events on P.E.I. have gained a lot of attention and will be returning again for the third straight year. And as a result, Johnston is now preparing himself for a big night of competitve art.
“It gets really exciting once you get rid of the stress of being on stage in front of hundreds of people. When I first started, I was nervous, really nervous,” said Johnston.
“This year I’m going in with a little more competitive spirit. I’ve got my game face on.”
He says the art battles on P.E.I. do a great job of putting the art community in the spotlight, especially to those who have never seen anything like it.
“It’s brought a lot of awareness and attention to art on Prince Edward Island. Once we get out in the community, everyone else will start to get involved with us,” he said.
“It’s really nice to be a part of something like this.”
Alex Douglas, director of branding and community engagement for P.E.I. Brewing Company, where the battles will be held, says the partnership his venue has struck with the Art Battle league has been a successful one, allowing both to grow in exposure over the last three years in Charlottetown.
“We saw the event happening in Toronto and Vancouver and other places and we reached out to them to bring it here. We figured it would be a great fit,” Douglas said.
The event brings a awareness to the art community and to the painters themselves, he said. “For such a small population, we have such a big art community here.
“It’s a different, fun and interesting way to bring the art world to the masses. It puts artists at that rock star level, but at the same time it’s a great community event that’s for everybody, not just the artists.”
Just the facts
