Moyna Matheson, owner of Samuel’s Coffee House in Summerside, holds up a promotional card for an event that her business and Kelly’s Flower Shoppe is hosting Thursday evening called Espresso Dating. The aim of the evening is to connect, over coffee and conversation, area singles. Tickets are being sold in advance for the event, which takes place at Samuel’s from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

A chance to watch love bloom before her very eyes excites Moyna Matheson.

It’s one of the reasons she and Cindy Robichaud, the owner of Kelly’s Flower Shoppe, have teamed up to, hopefully, make some love connections.

“We’ve seen engagements happen here (at Samuels), relationships have flourished here, so why not do it for others?” said Matheson. “Wouldn’t that be fantastic if that happened?”

Thursday night, Samuel’s Coffee House will be the site of a unique event, a social experiment called Espresso Dating. Its aim is to help area singles hoping to find that someone special.

“There are different age groups where it is challenging to meet other people. Sometimes, yes, you can meet at the gym or maybe you don’t want those traditional methods of going to a bar or whatever,” said Matheson. “We came up with the idea that this would be a comfortable place to relax and meet people. We did a twist on it, it being a coffee shop, that we would say espresso dating, meaning speed dating”

Speed dating is relatively new to Summerside, something, she admitted, that is more common in larger cities.

“There has been a lot of conversation about it, but there has been a lot of hesitation because I think everybody is fearful of the unknown. We hope that it is not just going to be a one-time thing. We want to learn from this first night,” said Matheson. “There are a lot of people who would like to be able to stand behind a wall and watch it, but not get in on the action.”

Tickets are sold in advance for Espresso Dating, which goes from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

“The biggest reason for that is we do want this to be as comfortable as possible, so it is nice if we know who is coming and we can prepare for that,” said Matheson. “We are going to make it light, we are going to make it fun and casual, so we will have a mingle time with maybe some trivia for everybody to relax.”

The actual speed dating will follow, with each woman seated at a table and men moving from each table, spending five minutes getting to know one another.

“We are going to have fun conversation starters, so if people are really at a loss of what to say, that will be there to help them,” said Matheson. “Maybe it is not particularly about finding a mate or a partner, but just meeting someone new.

“Maybe you just moved to the city and you want someone to go to the movies with.”

Happily married for 15 years, she admitted that, if single, it would be worth a try.

“On the Island sometimes we are lucky that we know everybody and we meet our husbands because we went to school with them,” added Matheson. “But, if you are a working professional, how are we supposed to meet anybody?”

Years ago there was a speed dating night in Charlottetown. There were over 20 women (students to lawyers, quite the range) and 4 guys. Might not sound like great odds, but it was a great night!
