Island writers and authors are encouraged to submit their work for consideration for the Prince Edward Island Book Award.

The book award recognizes the best in publications by Island authors, editors and book producers.

"For every round of book awards, we have a number of high quality books up for consideration, and it is great to see Island writers succeeding and being recognized for their work," says Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Hal Perry.

Authors and publishers have until March 1 to send in submissions for the 2016 Prince Edward Island Book Award.

The biennial award has three categories: fiction, non-fiction and poetry.

Submissions in each category are assessed by an independent jury for the content, quality of design, and production.

Books in either English or French must have been published in 2014 or 2015 and be written, created or edited by an Island resident.

Previous winners include the following: Ni'n na L'nu: The Mi'kmaq of Prince Edward Island - Jesse Francis and A.J.B. Johnston;Riptides: New Island Fiction, edited by Richard Lemm; The TWIG Collective - A Gathering of Twigs, edited by P. Susan Buchanan and Margot Maddison-MacFadyen

"The Island Book Awards showcase the excellence of Island authors and editors, honour the most outstanding books and writing and celebrate the publication of books on P.E.I., elsewhere in Canada and abroad, that are created by Islanders," said Richard Lemm, past winner and professor of Canadian Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Prince Edward Island.

"The submissions for 2016 will, no doubt, be evidence of the vitality and success of Island writing."
